Legal Seafoods is a seafood chain restaurant that is concentrated in the Boston area. Usually I am not too partial to chains, but I have been to several Legal Seafoods Locations and always have delicious food, good service, and an overall enjoyable time.
One thing that I really appreciate about Legal is that they prepare food to your specifications. For example, if on the menu, the Haddock is listed under the fried food section, but you would prefer to have it baked, they are more than happy to accommodate you. All you have to do is ask. Also, if you have any questions about how something is prepared, or would like a well-informed opinion about any item on the menu, the servers are extremely knowledgeable. I have never dealt with a waiter/waitress there who has been anything less than an expert on the food.
It is widely agreed upon that Legal Seafoods has the best clam chowder in the world. It has been served at presidential inaugurations, and believe me when I tell you that it is amazing-- a meal unto itself.
My personal favorite entry on the menu is the Classic Boston scrod, which is baked and covered with breadcrumbs. It is so tender and flavorful. The fish and chips are also very good. I personally don't eat lobster, but I took my mother to Legal when she came up to visit (she's a big lobster aficionado), and she said it was probably the best lobster she's ever had.
For those restaurant goers who don't enjoy seafood very much, but for whatever reason find themselves dining at Legal, rest assured, there are a few non seafood items on the menu that are delicious. The grilled chicken breast is out of this world.
Side dishes are also uniformly tasty-- especially the mashed potatoes.
AND... if all that isn't enough, Legal's desserts are simply sumptuous. I highly recommend the key lime pie, and the bananas foster is outstanding as well.
All of the Legal Seafood locations I have been to have been very good. If I had to pick my favorite, it would be the one in Kendal Square (that's in Cambridge near MIT) simply because the atmosphere is lively and sophisticated, though not elitist.
All in all, dining at this world famous seafood establishment is a one of a kind experience. For seafood lovers there isn’t anything to beat it.
