| Freak369's Full Review: Lego 2007 Belville Advent Calendar |
With December just a few days away, many kids will start opening their advent calendars. Sure, most of them are really cool and have some great things tucked in the little cavities but are any of them designed just for Lego lovers? There are a few Lego Advent Calendars on the market but this is the only one that's made just for girls! Granted, Annabelle has her girlie moments where she dons her pink frilly ballet outfits and flutters around the house sprinkling pixie dust everywhere but most of the time she is a little hellcat that wants to play with the boys. When I showed her the 2007 version of the Belville Advent Calendar her eyes glazed over and all she could say, in the cutest little zombified voice you could ever imagine, "pink - treasure - chest".
Lego Belville 2007 Advent Calendar
Having had the 2005 and 2006 versions of this and knowing what little treats were tucked away in them, I couldn't resist taking a peek at what was inside this one. Here is a hint; on the sides of the box there are clear round stickers, if you cut them with a sharp knife you can pull the tray out and see each of the cavities with the small bags of treats in each one of them. I really love the fact that the elements are bagged; the box is sturdy but if they weren't bagged pieces could slip out of their section and into another. Plus, it's pretty cool to have a different little bag to open each day. What I really wanted to know was if there was a difference between the 2005, 2006 and 2007 assortment of items.
Most of the things are the same; dainty little Belville figures, parts of a tea set, animals like cats and a mouse, a cute looking Christmas tree, a small side table, more accessories for a tea service, a baby crib, gift boxes and the coolest piece, a clear pink treasure chest. All of the things that are featured in the advent calendar can be used with Belville sets so this is a great way to add some very cool accessories without having to go out and buy more sets or try to hunt down theBelville Fairy Tale Accessories set. I had a mixed reaction when I checked out the contents, I was really hoping that there would be some really cool or different items but for the most part they are almost the same as the previous year's editions. That's not to say that there is anything wrong with the set but once you have opened one of them, opening the same thing the next year is a little boring.
If you are looking for other Belville gifts to give, the Belville Ice Cube Tray is cute but it does take a while to make a ton of them for parties or those special girlie gatherings. The Royal Crystal Palace is something that any Lego Girl would love to receive and it is large enough that the replay value of it warrants the hefty price tag. As I said, all of the pieces in this advent calendar can be used with the Belville sets so the twenty dollar investment in this set isn't a waste as they can be used over and over again.
You can order this through the Lego Magazine or at the online Lego World Shop for about twenty dollars. The prices may drop right before Christmas but that's no fun since this is something that is supposed to be opened before Christmas arrives. If you are a bargain shopper and simply want the elements and could care less about opening a flap each day, check the local toy stores after Christmas because you can always find these for up to 50% off. Since the boxes are marked with the year they are going to have a hard time selling them the next year so stock up on them while you can.
The Bottom Line
I have no doubt that Annabelle will love ripping the flaps open, I also have no doubt that she will do exactly that - rip. That means that when Christmas finally arrives this poor pink and purple thing is going to look like the turkey from "A Christmas Story", shredded and ripped to bits. It will be hard for me to sit there and watch her destroy it but at the same time, she's turning into a real Lego lover so eventually she'll realize that the boxes are worth keeping if for nothing more than sentimental value. If you have a girl that is into the Belville theme from Lego, this makes for a great gift to give them to get the holiday season rolling!
