The first set of the City Mini Heroes Collection contains the true heroes – the paramedic, the fire fighter and the police officer. Three of the most widely recognized figures in any city, they are truly some of the best figures ever designed. When the Mini Heroes Collection first hit the market back in the year 2000 people were head over heels about them. It gave both new and old collectors the chance to boost their inventory of Lego people and to give older series a much-needed boost.
As a whole, we never got into building mega cities like some people; we were most interested in other space and building our own designs. Even with that as a blatant fact, I couldn’t help but order a bunch of these from the Lego website. The attention to detail, overall aesthetic value and the fact that they are part of a mini series were all key factors in my purchase of the set.
Paramedic
With a cute little smile on his face, the paramedic is the first on the scene to help out in whatever way he can. His crisp white and blue uniform is traditional but very appealing. His uniform is predominately white with blue accents and logos and there’s even a pen in his breast pocket. The stenciled sunglasses give him a little different look than the other two figures in this set and help to make him stand out a little. His cap resembles a baseball hat and has a blue medic logo on it.
If I had to complain about this set it would be the fact that this figure has no accessories – no stethoscope, no medical bag, no nothing. If anything they could have given him a stenciled medical chart or something to hold on to. If you have other Lego sets you can take a flat 2x2 piece and put it in his hand – that’s about a close to a medical chart as I could get.
Unlike the other two figures in this set, the paramedic has yellow hands rather than black hands. As with almost all Lego figures, these hand pieces can be removed with a little work, so if you want to convert his hands to black or even white, you can do so if you have the available pieces.
Police Officer
Who’s hiding behind that mask? None other than a friendly female police officer to help guide traffic – that’s who! Decked out in a very impressive uniform this chic chick has one of the most awesome uniforms in the City series. Her torso is stenciled with a futuristic looking uniform complete with the “police” name and logo. She doesn’t have any weapons visible but she does have a paddle that she uses to direct traffic. She has black hands and that was s smart move by the designers, since her entire uniform, except the helmet is black, giving her white or yellow hands would have ruined her character.
Her helmet features a flip up visor and when in the down position it completely blacks out her face. If this is something that you don’t like, you can swap it out with any other visor from other sets. I switched hers to a clear visor and it looked a lot better. One of the main reasons I switched to the clear visor is when it is in the up position you can’t se the ‘police’ logo on the helmet – sure that is purely an aesthetic change but to me it mattered.
Fire Fighter
All I can say about this figure is WOW! The fire fighter featured in this set is simply awesome. More than likely the first thing that you will notice about him is the facemask and auxiliary breathing apparatus. The tanks on his back are just one of the many unique elements that can be found in this set. His visor has a slight blue tint to it and this just helps to make it visible within the facemask assembly. When I say that this is a “must see figure” I really mean it!
The stenciled torso is extremely detailed and the first time I saw it I had to get a closer look – so there I sat for a few minutes with this Lego figure smooshed up against my face. His uniform features a zipper down the front, two breast pockets and part of his shirt peeking out from under the collar.
Walk softly and carry a big axe! That’s right, this fire fighter isn’t playing games when he shows up on the scene of an accident. He’s more than ready to chop down doors, break through walls or rescue a little kitten from a tree. Even though he’s pretty cool looking, he lacks any detail on his legs. It would have been great is they would have carried over the stenciled design from the torso or even given him black legs – I swapped the pieces out and he looks a lot better with black legs than gray.
Display Stands
Keeping with the color scheme of the City series, the bases for these cool little collectors items are blue. There is a 2x2 grid of Lego pods into which the figures can be placed. At the rear of the stand there is a grooved section that holds the information card. The back of the hard has interesting little tid bits about the individuals and the front of the card severs as the background image. The blue color is really nice and was a great choice by the designers. Out of curiosity I took the fire fighter and pit him on the Ninja base to see how he would look on a white bases verses a blue one. Maybe I was just too used to the blue base – because the white one looked awful.
Who Would Love This
Anyone who is in the public service field would get a kick out of this set. A great gift for that special someone that puts their life on the line to serve and protect others. As a collector and fan of Lego’s I found it extremely hard to resist the appeal of this set. For $4.99 I was able to pick up three figures and their accessories plus the cool display stands. If you have a Lego lover in your midst, I strongly suggest that you check out this set at the Lego website.
The Bottom Line
When you look at all you are getting with this set – three figures and accessories – it is more than worth the suggested retail price of $4.99. These are still available at the Lego website however if you choose to try and pick these up at online auction sites, be forewarned that some sellers will try to say that these sets are “rare” or “hard to find”. Sorry, they couldn’t be further from the truth.
It’s so hard to try and pick a favorite set from the entire line of the Mini Heroes Collection. The green ninjas, the pit droids, the fire fighter – how can you possibly expect me to say which one is my favorite? If pressed for an answer I’ll simply nod, whip out my credit card and pick up as many of these as I possible can. Hey, what’s a Lego junkie to do?
