Pros: Good for small exchange gift or stocking stuffer.
Cons: Poor value and quality for the price
The Bottom Line: Below average value for a Lego set; unless if you are an avid kayaker, I'd pick up a different set!

Lego City Set #5621 Mini Figure Coast Guard Kayak
PRO: Smiling Kayaker. Aren't the all? An interesting if super basic piece that complements the LEGO "City" branded playsets and the newer "Coast Guard" rescue sets.
CON: This is a pretty bad value for a lego set. A price point of $5-6 should be more fair than the $9.99 I paid at a Box Store, or what is the going rate online and at most other retailers. This makes a very atrocious price per piece (PPP) ratio of $0.47 PER PIECE!!! (PPP = full price divided by the number of pieces in the set.
PIECES: Only 21, thus the low PPP. A few unique pieces still don't make up for this disparity: Mini figure protective Kayaker Helmet, Bouy, and Kayak Paddle.
AVAILABILITY: Widely available at stores (purchased in July 2009) and online. A few ebayers and collector resellers already have this mediocre mini-set at $15+ which is very unfair, IMHO (in my humble opinion).
DIRECTIONS: The one upside of this set is the relative ease and simplicity in the directions of the set. As per Lego's usual overly simplified and useful directions, this set is a breeze to put together. Younger kids >6 may need help in pressing the pieces together, but most should be abel to follow the clear, set by excruciating, full-color, overly drawn out, almost to amazing depths, for people to put this kit together.
OVERALL: This piece would be a nice last minute present buy, but it just simply doesn't have any overarching unique or redeeming characteristics that would put it into the mini-set category.
MINIFIGURE: Only one: A Kayaker.
DOES IT FLOAT: NO! The mini-figure does a bit on his own, but put him in the Kayak and his sinks. Sort of the theme of this review.
Please consider a better deal: The Lego Membership Club. For only $40 plus S&H you get 6 kits like this plus monthly mailings:
