Sandwiched somewhere between the old Lego City sets and the Metropolis theme, the Lego designers slid in some very interesting sets. These were originally targeted towards kids who were making the transition from the Jack Stone sets to the regular sets. Personally, I think they should have kept the Metropolis sets going because they filled a void in the police and action hero theme before the introduced the Spider-Man and Batman sets. I ended up with this set by complete accident; I was trying to order another one of the similarly named sets in the Ninja line, Treasure Transport, and ended up with this one. If you know anything about Lego you know that there is a huge difference between the two themes; in fact, you don't need to know anything about Lego sets to know there is a difference between ninjas and police officers.

The Prisoner Transport is an awesome add on set for anyone that has any type of city, law or town set up. In a lot of ways the transport vehicle is set up the same way as the old Lego Soccer Transport busses except this lacks the cool clear windows. Some of the things that I absolutely love about this are the numerous doors that are on it. Well, there are compartments to store things in as well as two rear doors that open up so you can throw the criminals in. And yes, this comes with everyone favorite bad guy, The Brickster! Building the transport isn't hard but you do need to pay attention to the step by step illustrations. Experienced builders will have this together in less then ten minutes, those just starting out may require a little more time but it isn't something that I consider hard in any way. The chunky wheels are great for rolling over tough terrain or parked cars and with a little modification you can turn this into a sweet little assault vehicle.
You only get two figures with the set so that's one of the reasons why this is strictly an add on set because there is only so much fun you can have with only two characters. The Brickster is always a nice one to get a hold of and the cop is a cut above what you normally get with the cops and robbers play sets from Lego. You have to love his little hat and all the stenciled detail on his clothing but he doesnt have a gun or end a night stick. The accessories are limited but nice; the top mount siren and faux spotlight are fun to play around with but most of the perks of this set are in the construction and lay out of the vehicle. Like what you ask? The moldings around the wheel wheels, dark tinted windscreen and barred pieces that are used for the side of the vehicle.
On a side note; this does not have any type of special armor or add on weapons. Someone at a Lego fan site claimed to have gotten some type of super enhanced set with all sort of extra pieces. It turns out he was blowing smoke and such a set never existed in this theme. Even the Metropolis ones didnt have such things; they did have some sweet assault vehicles but nothing that looked like it came from the RoboCop or Terminator films.
Since this is an add on set, the price on it isn't all that bad. You can find this at most toy stores for under ten dollars but if you hunt around and dont mind a banged up box, you can get it for about six dollars when places like Wal-Mart have their clearance sales. Is it worth it? It all depends on what you intend to do with it. If you are adding it to an existing theme or city then it is great because it is the same scale and size as other vehicles in the Town and City Lego themes. The downside to it is that there aren't any stenciled pieces. This is where having a good brick broker comes into play. You can easily customize this with stickers and other elements to give it a completely different look without having to rip anything apart. If this would have been incorporated into the Metropolis theme I am sure it would have been a lot more popular.
The Bottom Line
This is a nice set for kids over the age of five to play with; there are some small pieces in the set that could present a choking hazard so be sure that kids know to clean up the bits when they are done. I really wish there were more "police" stenciled pieces with this set because they are always nice to have if you want to build your own vehicles. I really like the number of clear pieces that come with this set; it gives it a nicer look and they can be moved around to where you want them if you want to give customizing this a try. One of the coolest things about this is the room in the back of the wagon; you can five four or five figures in there so the next time the soccer hooligans get out of hand, you can lock them up in one of these.
