When it comes to strange and odd sets, Lego has more than a few to choose from. The Street Sweeper is part of the Lego City series and can add a lot of spunk to an otherwise boring scene. It is relatively easy to build, comes with one of the Lego Worker figures and is designed to stay together and not shed pieces even if it's smacked around and run into buildings. Some people have said that they dont care for the overall design of it, that its a little on the busy side. I have to agree and disagree with them; there is only so much that you can do with Lego pieces so sometimes things get crammed together or omitted all together. In the case of the Street Sweeper, they have a good design but they really need to clarify in the text description that it is not a functioning street sweeper. Yes, there were a lot of complaints about that too.

Going with the usual Lego City theme, a majority of the sweeper is in yellow. There are some very cool things attached to the Street Sweeper and even though some people complained that it made it look "junky" or bulky, I think most of them are really cool. One small thing that almost everyone overlooked were the slanted red pieces that are used for hazard lights on the tops of the sweeper. It's rare to get red translucent pieces to start with let alone ones that have a slant to them. The top section of the sweeper lifts up so you can get the figure inside it. This was one of the biggest complaints about the design of it; the lack of doors. If they would have added even one door to it, it would have upped the price because you would have to extend the size of the sweeper to make room for it to open and close. That is the only reason why I can think that they would omit a door or pair of doors.
I really like the windscreen that is on the front; it us a canopy piece that is usually used for planes are larger assault vehicles but it totally and completely works on the sweeper. One thing you need to know about this piece is that it is pretty delicate and will show scratches and marring in a heartbeat. Outside of sealing it with a peel off type of plastic, there's no way to protect it. Using a clear sealer could leave it with ripples or it could make it look fogged. High marks for the choice of piece but low marks for the quality of it. Another cool thing is the fire extinguisher on the back; it is a little on the large side but the red color of it helps break things up a little. You can place this any where you want on the sweeper but it does look best on the back.
Inside the sweeper it is a tight fit for the figure but it is the world of Lego we are dealing with. As usual the small steering wheel doesn't allow for the figure to grab a hold of it; I can overlook that but some people still complain about it. There is a large hand held sweeper vent and duct that attaches to the outside of the vehicle, this is not operable so it's just there for looks. The same can be said for the big blue roller on the front. It will spin but not on its own, you have to move it around to get it to spin. This doesn't suck up pieces or move them around and that is something that Lego really needs to make clear on their product page and in their catalogs. This has a suggested retail price of $7.99 so you would think that most people would realize they arent going to get something that is motorized but that doesnt stop them from complaining about it.
This comes with one Worker figure; he's done up in orange and blue, the usual colors of the Lego City Workers. I really like the push broom that comes with this; I would love to see one of our local garbage men with one of these when they come to pick up the trash; there are days when I think they dump more trash on the ground that they collect. There's a modest amount of stenciled detail on his uniform but nothing that has the Lego or any other theme logo on it so you can add him to other scenes without there being a design clash. What's the worst thing about this set? The wheels, they are way too small for it and it makes it look a little goofy. Even if they would have added the treaded tires to it, it would have looked a lot better. We tried to swap out the slicks with the treaded wheels and there wasn't enough room for them. If you want to add treaded ones you will have to add pieces at the bottom to allow for some extra rub room.
The Bottom Line
Even though there are some small design flaws with this, it's not a bad set and it is something that any Lego lover of collector would love to get. This also makes for a great stocking stuffer for the holidays or as a small gift to add to a gift basket. This is part of the Lego Exclusives line meaning that you can only get it online at the Lego World Shop or through the Lego Shop At Home Magazine. It is relatively easy to build and fun to play with but if you are giving this to a child that doesn't have other Lego City sets, expect the fun to last about ten minutes before boredom sets in.
