| Freak369's Full Review: Lego Snowflake |
As soon as the Lego Magazine arrived, I wasted no time in adding the Lego Snowflake to my "must have" list for my order. Over the years we have collected a lot of seasonal Lego items and most of them have ended up as decorations on our tree. The Count Down To The Holidays Calendar [now called the Advent Calendar] was a complete blast when the boys were younger and now Annabelle has her own Belville themed Advent Calendar to open. No doubt, these will all end up being made into decorations for the tree but I strongly believe that none of them will ever be able to come close to what the Lego Snowflake has to offer in the way of looks. It's easy to build and looks amazing no matter where you hang it or have it on display. If you have a Lego lover or Lego fanatic in your house, this is something that they will absolutely flip over so be sure to order yours soon because Christmas is right around the corner.
Lego Snowflake K10106
Make up of 105 almost clear pieces, this snowflake has a very nice design to it. When I first saw it on the cover of the Lego Magazine I thought that there would be more shimmer to it but I fixed that with a nice thick coating of spray on glitter; actually I did this for two reasons. The most obvious being the adding sparkle of the glitter and second to keep it intact and in one piece. Since I went this route I won't be able to take it apart when Christmas is over but that's fine with me. I would rather have it stuck together than to have to hunt for pieces next year. Yes, you can build your own if you have the pieces that are required but there were at least seven or eight of them that I didn't have so buying this set was a true necessity. Now that I have the plans for it I think I can make some small modifications to make others in different colors but none of them will look exactly like this one. It comes with a small hanger so you can attach it to the tree or hang it from the wall but I used clear fishing line to hang it from the light fixture.
Building it takes about five minutes, if even that long. The instructions that you get are clear and to the point so there is almost no room for error if you pay attention to which pieces go in which spot. If you are new to building Lego sets then you may want to separate the pieces so you can avoid having to rip it apart and starting over from scratch. Once built the snowflake is almost nine inches wide and high so it isn't something that's small or will get lost in the shuffle with other decorations. I've had this up for about a week now and when people see it they shake their head and ask me if I've gone off the deep end. No, I am a Lego addict and pretty darn proud of it. There are some small pieces in the set so if you have younger kids around you may want to keep this out of their reach if you don't plan on gluing it or coating it with a sealer.
If I had to voice one complaint about this it would be that the only place to buy it is online at the Lego World Shop or through the Lego Magazine. This sells for $7.99 which might seem like a lot to pay for 'some plastic' but you are getting some unique pieces with the set. I have to assume that the only reason this isnt being sold in stores is that it is a seasonal item and if they don't sell before Christmas then stores will have to tuck them away until next year or cut the price on them to get rid of them. Sadly, there are a lot of awesome Lego items that never make it into stores; partly because of poor packaging [like the Lego key chains] or because stores just don't have the space to carry a thousand different Lego sets.
The Bottom Line
I have absolutely no regrets about buying this or spending almost eight dollars on it. It's something that everyone in the house loves and it's given us some great ideas on building Lego snowflakes. No doubt we will be making others now that we have the instruction sheet from this one but alas, there will only be one original Lego Snowflake. If you are a Lego lover or know someone that this, this makes for a great gift but don't wait too long to order one, the cut off date for 'before Christmas deliveries' ends soon so if you don't want to end up paying an arm and a Lego for expedited shipping, order yours today. This is a great way to add some sparkle and glitz to your tree, front door or in my case, hanging from the overhead light in the livingroom.
As always, thanks for the visit
