| xadrian's Full Review: Lego Star Wars Millennium Falcon (Tm) |
This was a gift to me for x-mas. I had taken a leave of LEGO for a couple months while I basked in the glow of becoming a dad, so I let my LEGO radar go lax while 6 or 7 new sets came out, this being one of them.
Speaking for everyone with low attention spans, this may be a little bit of a chore to finish this set. For you model makers it's not complex enough. For you who like to play with ships and models it's a little big. For those Star Wars fans this isn't entirely accurate. Sounds like a lot of bad stuff doesn't it. Well I'll get this nastiness out of the way then the good stuff.
It's too big for small hands, that's the biggest problem. Most of the Star Wars sets are good for little paws, but this is pretty big and heavy. This is one time when the flat bottom style LEGO's taken with Star Wars didn't bother me because it's a little big to hold anywhere else. There is also a few steps that are really hard to follow. This is harder to explain, the LEGO nuts will know what I'm talking about. There are a few steps, near the completion of the top of the saucer, that the set just doesn't stay together long enough to secure it with more blocks. It was flimsy and very frustrating. Placing the saucer on top of the rest of the light freighter is also no easy chore.
Technically it's not very close to the actual Falcon either. There's only room for one in the cockpit, there's only one turret, and there's some little "LEGO invention" ship that shoots out the side. For you Star Wars purists, let's call it an escape pod, maybe one of the many jetisoned as decoys before reaching the Death Star. (Did I just label myself a geek?)
Ok, the good points. The thing looks darn cool when it's done. Exact likeness aside, it's just neat to stare at and imagine. The minifigs that come with it are pretty cool, personally I think Threepio is the best. (Little side dislike on the figures, Leia probably could have used a dress or something, she just didn't look right with white pants instead.) And to be honest, it's hard to have a ship this big without having to cross-section it to get inside. Even Kenner did it, so the removal of the top isn't bad. The assembly (save for that one part) is pretty basic and doesn't take too long, little longer than maybe a 7 year old has to spend on this many pieces.
One thing to remember, this is a $100 set. Personally I'll have spent whatever it cost to get it, but I'm a rabid fan. This may not be the ideal gift for kids because it's a little on the pricey side. I'd go with the cheaper Y-Wing/TIE Advance. It's about $40 less and the ships are little more fun to play with.
