I came across the Diver & Shark Lego set by complete accident. I was looking for several of the sets from the European Nautica series and accidentally ordered the wrong set number. Much to my surprise when I opened the box I found a nice little treasure the extremely hard to find white shark as well as a very cool diver decked out in scuba gear. One of the real perils of ordering toys from an oversea vendor is that there is a small chance that no matter how much detail is provided you might end up with the wrong set. Being a Lego junkie I couldnt bear to pack up these sets and send them back so I sent the vendor an email along with a few photos of the set I originally intended on ordering and tried again. I decided to hang on to the Diver & Shark set since I had no idea if Id ever be able to find it again if I should happen to need it in the future.
This is one of the smaller sets in the Lego Town series. More to the point, it falls into the Divers mini series that was originally release in 1997. The series included eleven sets that included several underwater vehicles, rescue boats, a large number of fish [dolphins, stingray, sharks etc] and a tremendous number of figures. The Divers series works great with City, Town and Aqua Zone series so if you have any of these you can mix and match the Divers sets for a little bit of variety.
The white shark included with this set is sleek and extremely rare. To the best of my knowledge it is only available in six Lego sets. The dark gray shark is usually the one that you will find in most of the Lego Town, Nautica or Divers series. The shark is made up of two pieces, the body and the jaw assembly. Building the shark is easy just snap the two pieces together and you are done. If you are panning on making any changes to the shark such as color or accents you might want to do this before you attach the jaw since it is a little hard to get the two elements apart.
The shark has two sections of teeth, the bottom row shows the ridges into which the top row rests. Visually the shark is a great looking piece and has two side fins and a top dorsal. There are also three sections on the sharks underbelly that can be used to connect it to other Lego elements. The shark is three and a half inches long, which gives him a great scale to the diver in this and other sets in the series.
The diver is a great looking figure and comes with a lot of accessories. His diver outfit is red and features the diver logo [red and white] on the lower portion of the torso. The scuba rig that comes with the set is nicely detailed and the diver can be assembled with or without the rig. The red helmet and transparent blue visor really compliment the diver and just like the scuba rig these two pieces can be used or set aside for another use. The visor snaps into the helmet easily and stays in place but you always have the option to change the visor to another color. One of the nicest features to the diver has to be the black flippers that snap onto the feet of the figure.
Even though this is a small set, that doesnt mean that you dont get some nice perks with it. The brown barrel is a very nice accessory and you can never have too many of these in your stock. There is a small opening in the top of the barrel into which you can insert a sword [provided] or with the lid removed it can be used for storage. The sword is nice but not really necessary for the set. The two round transparent orb elements [one red, one green] give the set a nice touch and can be used as treasure or attached to the light orange hand held motor that is used to help the diver maneuver under water. This can be used in a number of ways as a people mover, shark repellant or even as a treasure-hunting piece of machinery. The last accessory is the spear gun that snaps into the divers hand. It doesnt have much detail to it but it is a great little weapon to have handy when shark hunting.
The instructions for this set are easy to follow, well illustrated and show you how to build the diver, shark and accessory pieces. Start to finish you are looking at about five minutes to build everything included in the set. The diver is comprised of eight pieces [visor, helmet, scuba tank, head, torso, legs and flippers] and the instructions show you how to properly assemble him. The flippers are a nice touch but they do have a tendency to fall off with any amount of use. In older sets the shark comes assembled however newer ones have the shark in two pieces the body and the jaw section. These two pieces snap together easily and once connected you shouldnt have any trouble with them falling apart.
The Bottom Line
This is a great set to have on hand if you are building any type of underwater Lego scene. If you are looking to add a little bit of change to your Alpha Team or Aqua Zone sets, this is a great option. You might have to adjust some of the pieces on the diver to make them color coordinated with the above mentioned sets, but this is half the fun of having Lego sets. Since this set was originally released in 1997, finding it in mainstream toy stores might be a chore. Try checking smaller toys stores that deal with older Lego sets, online vendors or auctions. Make sure you are bidding on complete sets if you take the auction route or you might end up with missing pieces. I picked these up for $1.99 a set, which is a great price for a five year old set that is no longer in production. When the set was originally release it had a suggested retail price of $2.99.
As with all Lego sets, there are small pieces that could present a chocking hazard. Care and caution should be used when smaller children share the same play area as older kids. The suggested age range for this set is 5 12 but you should use your own judgment in this area.
