User Rating: Excellent
Pros:Made in blue or purple, interesting design, comfortable to write with.
Cons:No longer in production, can easily be confused with other girlie Lego pens.
The Bottom Line: A unique and interesting pen but be prepared to collect your Click-It stars from the floor on a regular basis.

The marketing division of Lego has tried many things to get girls interested in their products; from the still popular Belville series to things like the Click-It series, they make it very clear that they want girls interested in their wares. When the Lego Writing System pens were first released they held back on doing pens for the Lick-It line because they weren't sure if it was going to be something that was going to sell. After the introduction of the Heart styled pen they released the Star version. It wasn't nearly as girlie and bathed in pink but it was still something that no boy or man would ever be caught dead writing with.
Lego Writing System Click-It Star Pen 1803
One of the biggest things that separates this from the regular Lego Writing System of pens is that it doesnt use blocks or beads on a metal stem. The top section of the pen has holes in it that you use the press the Click-It pieces into. You can use almost every type of Click-It piece so if you have accessory pieces from sets or other pens you can swap them out and make truly unique designs. This is almost identical to the colors that were used on the Dream Star Pen; dreamy shades of blue with some pink and purple elements all dine up with a nice blue and clear barrel.
This comes with one ink cartridge [black ink] and 12 Click-It pieces as well as the pen itself. Since this is the old style Lego Writing System it comes in a hard clamshell type case that is used to store the pen and pieces in. This can present a problem because of the star shapes; they do tend to pop out of the holes on a regular basis and if you aren't careful you will end up stepping on them and they hurt just as much as Lego bricks. The shape is a little different from the other pens in the series; instead of a triangular grip on the bottom it is smoother and a little easier to get used to. It is a chunky styled pen so kids can usually adapt to using it a little quicker than adults but give it five minutes and you won't notice the thickness of it at all. The stars an accent pieces that can be used on the pen do stick out from the body of it so be aware of that before you start looking for it. They aren't the usual peg type pieces that slide on to the pen and they can and will pop off of it on a regular basis.
As far as the overall quality of this as a pen, it does write nice but it could take a little while to get used to the chunkiness of it. It isnt as smooth writing as something as high priced as a Cross Ion but it gets the job done without smearing or skipping. The tip is retractable but it doesnt have a clicker on it, you have to turn the metal base to expose or retract the tip. The ink cartridges last a long time and they can be refilled, there is a slip in the case with refill sizes that will work with the Click-It Star Pan. This comes with a one yaer warranty against manufacturer defects but since this is about six years old, that date has long since passed.
If you are thinking about getting this pen for yourself or for someone else as a gift you are going to have to play detective because there are a lot of different types of pens that look like this and they are often misrepresented by online sellers. This comes in two colors, blue and purple; the stock number for the blue is 1803 and the purple is 1806. Even with those numbers you can still have a hard time finding this because Lego changed the set numbers on them a few times. This is a totally different pen than the carabiner styled ones that were also released in the Click-It series. These are the old style pens that cost two to three times as much as the newer and inferior Connect & Build pens so dont fall off your chair if you see them selling for $15.00 to $20.00.
The Bottom Line
This does make for an excellent gift for girls if you can find it and if they already have some of the Click-It sets then they can use some of the pieces from it to make their own designs or color combinations. Because of some of the smaller pieces in the set this is recommended for kids ages six and up but because they can pop off easily I wouldn't let a child use this if there are younger kids present because of the choking hazard the elements present. While the design doesn't really impress me all that much I have to say that this is a well made product that looks cool and its something that girls can have a lot of fun with. It is a nice add-on to both the Lego Writing System and the Click-It line and something that any Lego junkie would droll over.
As always, thanks for the visit
