kjscrafts's Full Review: Lemon Meringue Pie Murder
Lemon Meringue Pie Murder is the second book I have read by Joanne Fluke. I did not start at the beginning of the series, as I started with Blueberry Muffin Murder, however I did not feel lost because I had not read the previous books. This one comes after the Blueberry Muffin Murder and I did find that reading the one before did enhance the book, but I still do not think it is necessary and you can start anywhere in the series. I have slowly been collecting the series from used bookstores, so not having to go in order is a big positive about this book and the series in general.
In Lemon Meringue Pie Murder Hannah yet again gets involved in a murder investigation. She is like the baker version of Jessica Fletcher if you ask me. The Murder, She Wrote series and the Hannah Swensen Mystery series really do seem similar and that is why I love this series. There is just something about small town murder mysteries with women being the unofficial sleuths that makes great reading. This series is actually even better than Murder, She Wrote in my opinion because at least from what I know all the books do take place in the small town area of Minnesota (Lake Eden) that Hannah lives in.
I found this book even better than Blueberry Muffin Murder. I am not exactly sure why, but this one just seemed to keep me interested for longer periods of time to the point I often did not want to put it down. The odd thing is that the murderer kind of seemed obvious from the beginning, so I thin some will actually not like it because of this. I guess part of it was the interesting connections that evolve as she first investigates the murder of Rhonda, who Hannah's mother finds rather than the normal incidents of Hannah finding the body, and the appearance of money from an old bank robbery. Also, it does not have as much romance issues with Hannah and her two boyfriends, Norman and Mike. Not that it the relationship stuff is not interesting, but Blueberry Muffin Murder began to feel a little too much like romance novel and this one keeps a much better balance. Lastly the things that I think really kept this interesting enough that I wanted to read on for were Hannah struggling with a diet because she thought she gained a lit if weight and the leading up to the town's 4th of July festivities.
Overall I really enjoyed this murder mystery, although it was a somewhat obvious solution from at least the middle. There is more to it than just the murder mystery, such as being about Hannah's life in general from her romance life to business life of running the Cookie Jar. Of course, the recipes after every few chapters that relate to treats mentioned in the book are wonderful additions even though I have not had a chance to try any yet. I personally look forward to trying the Orange Snaps cookies.
