| majenta's Full Review: Les Sucettes by France Gall |
France Gall was born on October 9, 1947 (in Paris; real name Isabelle), which means she was not quite 17 1/2 when she won the 1965 Eurovision Song Contest with "Poupee du Cire Poupee du Son" (lit. "Wax Doll, Sound Doll." An English version of it is "A Lonely Singing Doll" by "Twinkle" (CD--GOLDEN LIGHTS: SPECIAL EDITION).
.TU N'AS PAS LE DROIT ("You Don't Have the Right")--to tell me what to do just because you're a guy--even MY guy--and I'm a girl. Grrrlpower!! I'm backed up by my own confidence and this wicked brass section. Yes, she was compared to Lesley Gore ("It's My Party," "Judy's Turn to Cry," "You Don't Own Me").
.IL NEIGE ("The Snow")--good to listen to while it's falling....or on a boiling day on which there's absolutely no chance of it.
.OH! QUELLE FAMILLE ("Oh! That Family!")--France and her chorus, Les Petits Ils de France, describe family members with lighthearted help from flutes.
.LES LECONS PARTICULIERS ("Private Lessons")--The orchestration sounds like the opening to "Masterpiece Theatre." This is Gall's version of crush-on-teacher, or at least private young tutor, from whom she'd take lessons forever if she could.
.J'AI RETROUVE MON CHIEN ("I Found My Dog")--But first she searches and searches, appealing to St. Anthony for divine assistance. Very tuneful; has the elementary-school music class feel.
.BONSOIR JOHN JOHN ("Good Night, John-John")--yes, I do believe we're talking about THE John-John here. It's as lullaby-gentle as the title suggests.
.CELUI QUE J'AIME ("Things I Like")--A pretty song.
.L'ECHO ("The Echo")--If you liked, loved, or were moved by Tommy James and the Shondells' "Mirage," you might like this. It means what it says--the echo effect is TERRIFIQUE!
.LA ROSE DES VENTS--("Rose in the Winds")--A wistful-sounding song about imagination.
.LA GUERRE DES CHANSONS-("The War of Songs") Groovy, jazzy, about the music scene at the time.
.LES SUCETTES ("The Lollipops")--Ah, the title track! If you've ever heard anything at all ABOUT France Gall, this was probably it. This is the Serge Gainsborough that some people interpreted as being about something other than sweet, innocent little lollipops If you don't let that BACK-story poison your view, this is a tasty track with the feel of a lazy late-summer/early-autumn day. You might even hear a harmonica and some clever wordplay.
.QUAND ON EST ENSEMBLE ("When We're Together")--Her background singers remind me of Shelley Fabares' "Johnny Angel." The total effect is of a spotlight dance in an old-fashioned gazebo--where the "spotlight" is moonlight.
