I never thought I would find a cd where every song is just as good as the next. After one listen to Avril's cd I instantly loved each song. If you listen to it for the first time, have a set of lyrics with you so you can sing along :)
Losing Grip
The first song on the album, also Avril's favorite is losing Grip. It's a very angry song, and it tells the story of a guy that just doesn't care about her and is never there for her.
"Why should I care, cuz you weren't there when I was scared, I was so alone. You need to listen, I'm starting to trip, I'm losing my grip and I'm in this thing alone."
I know a lot of people who skip over this first track and go straight to complicated, but I feel that it really adds to the album to begin so strongly.
Complicated
An instant favorite that you can just listen to over and over again. 7 months after first hearing the song, I still cannot get enough of it. This song tells the story of a guy who tries to be someone else around other people and is basically fake.
"You know you're not fooling anyone when you become somebody else, round everyone else, you're watching your back like you can't relax, you're trying to be cool you look like a fool to me."
It's a slow paced song to begin with, however after the second verse it picks up, and the guitars add an extra effect.
Sk8er Boi
Avril's second single tells the story of a girl who turned down a guy because he wasn't cool enough for her. He then turns out to be a guitarist on MTV and he proves to her that he is good after all. However in the end of the song, Avril ends up with the guy.
A pretty good headbanging song, (and air guitar song if i do say so myself) this is a very catchy song.
"He was a sk8er boi, she said see ya later boi, he wasn't good enough for her, now he's a superstar, slamming on his guitar, does your pretty face see what he's worth."
I'm With You
This is Avril's third single, and it's a more mellow, lonely song that the others have been so far. It's about a time when Avril was feeling lonely and was just thinking "where's my guy?"
It starts of slow and soft, though at the chorus she sings some high notes and that evens the song out perfectly.
"It's a damn cold night, trying to figure out this life, won't you take me by the hand, take me somewhere new, I don't know who you are but I...I'm with you."
Mobile
I have actually heard this song on the radio before, so I'm assuming she's going to make it her fourth single. Mobile is a song about change and she compares herself to a mobile hanging from the ceiling.
"Everything's changing when I turn around, all out of my control I'm a mobile."
Avril's voice in this song is magnificent, and she reaches some pretty high notes in the chorus which just leave you amazed.
Unwanted
Another angry song by Avril. Kind of like Losing Grip, this song is about a guy that just ignores her and shuts her out and shows how unwanted she felt during that time.
"You don't want me, don't ignore me, you don't want me there you just shut me out, make me go away."
There's an awesome bridge in this song and it just adds to the whole angry vibe.
Tomorrow
The pace slows down a bit at this point, and Tomorrow is a slow steady song.
"And I wanna believe you - when you tell me that it'll be ok, yeah I try to believe you, not today, tomorrow it may change."
Anything But Ordinary
The song that proves Avril's voice isn't just ordinary.
"Is it enough to love, is it enough to breath, somebody rip my heart out, and leave me here to bleed, is it enough to die, somebody save my life, I'd rather be anything but ordinary please."
Thing I'll Never Say
This song opens with a weird intro, but it's very unique and will leave you trying to sing it later on. Avril denies that this song is 'raunchy' even though some of her lyrics are a little suggestive.
"If I could say what I wanna say, I say I'd wanna blow you ... away, be with you every night, am I queezing you too tight, if i could say what i wanna see, i'd wanna see you go down... on one knee, marry me today, yes i'm wishing my life away, with these things I'll never say."
It's an amazing song anyways, and you can just tell that Avril was trying to be clever and sneaky when she wrote this :)
My World
A more pop orientated song, this tells the story of her life.
"Made my money by cutting grass, got fired by fried chicken a$$, all in the small town, Napanee."
An addictive song, it's an instant favorite as soon as you get the album because it's easy to learn the words to, and catchy!
Nobody's Fool
I don't know if you would classify this song half rap half rock/pop. It's about not letting people turn you into someone you're not. If someone doesn't like the person you are, then they're not worth it.
"If you're trying to turn me into someone else, it's easy to see I'm not down with that, cuz I'm nobody's fool, if you're trying to turn me into something else, I've seen it enough and I'm over that."
A great song to listen to when you're mad at someone :)
Too Much To Ask
By the time you reach this song, you start to think "wow, avril has had a tough time with the guys in her life." I'm still not sure what the exact meaning of the song is, so se eif you can figure it out yourself.
"Every time I try to make you smile,
You always go on feeling sorry for yourself
Every time I try to make you laugh
Youd stand like a stone
Alone in your zone
Is that too much that I'm askin for?"
Naked
This song talks about having someone who knows you so well that you're practically naked around them because they can see right through you and you can't put on a face and lie.
Whether Avril means that she is physically naked or emotionally naked is not known, though I'm sure she meant it metephorically.
"I'm trying to remember, why I was afraid, to be myself and let the covers fall away, I guess I've never had someone like you, to help me fit in my skin."
