Pros:Fast, easy to install, easy to remove security software before activated
Cons:Security software has too many prompts and dialog boxes that waste time.
The Bottom Line: is that I like my jumpdrive and will keep using it until I break it :)
I received this jumpdrive as a gift for my birthday and so far I would recommend it with a couple of warnings.
Construction:
This drive seems solidly constructed as I've dropped it a couple of times and it is none the worse for wear. I like the rubberized grips on both sides of the jumpdrive that make for easy gripping. The end that protects the USB interface easily snaps on and off with just a slight squeeze. There is nothing to keep the protective end attached to the jumpdrive however, so you must remember to take the protective end with you when finished.
Dimensions: 70.3mm L x 30.8mm W x 11.5mm H
Secure Feature:
This drive comes with 256-bit AES encryption which in theory should keep all but the most determined hackers out of your jumpdrive. It should keep all your data safe from prying eyes and if you were to forget your jumpdrive somewhere then your data would be safe.
However, I don't keep any sensitive data on my jumpdrive and I found the security feature to be annoying. Instead of just loading up to the folder for me to open files I would get a series of prompts on what I wanted to do with my jumpdrive and a dialog box telling me to wait while jumpdrive secure was being loaded. I also found that sometimes I could not stop the USB drive to remove it until I closed Microsoft Outlook, even though I didn't have anything in Outlook accessing the drive. I sometimes had to stop the device twice before it would let me remove it safely.
Company Customer Support:
I eventually wanted to remove the security software so I shot off an email to Lexar on their suggested method for doing this as I have heard of secure jumpdrives freezing if the security software is not properly removed. They sent me a detailed instruction list on how to exactly backup and save the security software and how to remove it from the drive. They responded in less than a day and didn't try to convince me to keep the security feature. I thought it was excellent customer service.
Features:
256MB of storage space. I reformatted mine using the FAT file system as directed by Lexar and ended up with 245MB of usable space. I would imagine that NTFS formatting would yield slightly more space.
USB 2.0 - This is the faster USB communication protocol and on computers that are equipped to use it, it sure makes a difference in transfer speed. I will not purchase another USB 1.0 (1.5Mbits/second) or 1.1 (12Mbits/second) device after seeing the speed of the 2.0 jumpdrive.
However, Lexar is a little misleading with their USB 2.0 claim. USB 2.0 has three speeds (480Mbits/sec, 12Mbits/second and 1.5Mbits/second). On the Lexar website it lists the jumpdrive speed as:
Read speed: 8MB per second (equivalent to 64Mbits)
Write speed: 6MB per second (equivalent to 48Mbits)
While still slower than the USB 2.0 would lead you to believe, it is still very quick in all my transfer tests. It took me less than 5 seconds to move 32 MB of pictures off the jumpdrive to the desktop.
It comes with a 2 year warranty, although I didn't purchase it so I'm not sure I'm eligible to have the warranty.
Installation:
This jumpdrive is compatible with Windows 98SE/Me/2000/XP
Mac OS X, Mac OS 8.6 or above. Windows 98SE requires you to have an internet connection to get a driver to complete installation.
I had put this jump drive in dozens of different computers running Windows 2000 and XP and they all recognized the jump drive with no problems.
Summary:
While the security software is nice if you have sensitive data on your jumpdrives, I found it annoying, but easy to remove(before it was activated). I could not remove the security software without knowing the password, so don't worry about people being able to deactivate it easily. I like the speed and construction and hope this drive lasts me a very long time.
