| foster's Full Review: Lift and Lock Swing |
During a visit to the park with my daughter when she was just a toddler, I discovered that the only activity she liked which did not involve me chasing after her was swinging. So I knew this was something we HAD to have at home! Why did I choose this one? Because it was on sale. Plain and simple.
It has served us well for over 4 years now. It has been very durable, with the exception that the red seat has faded very badly, and not evenly either, but in a splotchy way. It doesn't look too nice any more. But that is merely a cosmetic thing. It is still in one piece and functions properly.
The seat is large, which is nice. My daughter still occasionally climbs in to it, and she is five years old (albeit a thin, petite 5). The locking mechanism is not very difficult to use. It snaps into place easily, even the child can lock it for him/herself. Yet he/she can't UNlock it by him/herself because it is under the seat and positioned such that a young child would never figure out how to work it from that angle. The rope that the swing is hung on is VERY sturdy, and preferable to chains, which can pinch fingers. The only thing about the rope is that it is strung through two holes in the bottom of the swing which allow the swing to be tilted a bit sideways by sliding it one way or the other on the rope. I tend to be on the anal side, so it bothers me when the swing is not hanging quite straight. It also can cause the swing to go crooked if it's off center by too much. But you can adjust it fairly easily (I just can't ever get it quite right though - it's as bad as hanging a picture frame! <chuckle>)
From the minute I bought this swing, I wondered to myself why there was no strap/buckle to hold the child down. There is nothing to stop a child from pulling their legs out of the safety shield and standing up in the swing. My children each have tried this, but only once or twice in a total of 4 summers, with no mishaps. But I'm sure there are other children who have not been so lucky, since the swing ultimately had to be recalled. I haven't checked into the recall yet, but I would think adding a strap would be relatively easy, since there are already holes in the bottom of the swing to keep rain/water from collecting in the seat.
Despite the recall I still think it's a decent swing. With proper monitoring of the child, they can swing securely enough.
