jamiegor's Full Review: Linksys EtherFast® BEFSR41 Router
All you may ever need in a home network environment so long as you need only 4 ports. Uplink and Wan connections are a boon, and online updates have completed this product into a finely tuned piece of hardware with few if any glitches. Compare with hardware costing 100's or 1000's more.
I have had different versions of this unit for the past five years, and have implemented it into office scenarios, home use, and for friends and family. The only drawback are limitations, both optional on more costly hardware. These include:
-Lack of more ports to share (Linksys has 8 port unit as well)
-Charging for advanced firewall protection
-Lack of wireless capability
I have had no real problems with the lack of injectable firewall available at a cost, but this is not to say those wishing piece of mind would not enjoy it. I havent had the need so far to go ahead with it.
I as well have no need for the wireless. At my home, I have 2 pcs running, my wife has one and I have laser printer shared. System runs flawlessly, as it is connected to my Cable modem for always on status. A couple of years back, this unit would 'freeze up' occasionally, my thoughts being this has been due to change in IP address assign expiring, but since updates, this has not been a problem.
Included Firewall/switch is 10/100 autosensing, and ports are forwardable to designated ips. This is useful for Gaming, serving, or downloading. In order to properly set up KAZAA/ BITTORRENT, others, it is neccessary to forward ports (6000 range) to the machine that will be used to send/receive files. Otherwise it runs very slow if at all. The incldued web console is easy to use and requires little knowledge, and for the most part may need not be used past the inital setup.
