Pros: Looks very sleek, supports N wireless standard, good signal strength
Cons: Random disconnects, runs very hot, unreliable
The Bottom Line: Pass this one up. It does not work reliably. Wireless has been around a while and should work out of the box. This unit will produce nothing but a headache.
richlowejr's Full Review: Linksys WRT310N Wireless Router
My cable network connection was across the room from my computer, and I didn't want to string an unsightly cable across the room. Thus, I started looking at wireless networking options.
I was attracted to the Linksys WRT310N Wireless Router, even though it was very pricey compared to the other alternatives, because it said on the box "gigabit wireless" and supported the newest and greatest N wireless standard. I am a computer geek and didn't believe I'd have any trouble setting it up. I also purchased a wireless card from the same manufacturer for my computer to get the best throughput.
I got the router home, put in the CD and followed the onscreen instructions to the letter. It was extremely easy to install.
Now life would be good if the story stopped there.
After installing the wireless card on the computer on the other side of the room, I could not get the computer to network with the router. I spent an hour examining various settings, then decided to set the security down from WPA2 to WPA. After that the connection worked, mostly. I was not happy, because I wanted the most secure connection, but at least it could connect now.
But not for long. I soon found the connection dropped for no apparent reason at random intervals (which required the router to be unplugged to reset it). Also, when I rebooted the computer, the connection would not establish, so I manually attempted tried a few times until it connected. Now this was getting frustrating.
I surfed the Internet and found this was common to many many people. One thing mentioned in many of the postings I found was the device gets hot and this can cause disconnects. I shrugged, got a fan, and set it to blow across the wireless router.
This did not fix the disconnects.
Several hours later, after reading through all of the posts on the LinkSys site that had anything to do with the router, I put it back in the box for return.
The next day, I purchased a different router, which worked perfectly, didn't disconnect, had no heat problems, was just as fast, and worked on boot up of my computer.
Needless to say I was not happy with the LinkSys router.
