| badragon's Full Review: Litter Maid Advanced Deluxe Litter Maid Litter Box |
The Litter Maid Self Cleaning Litter Box is a terrific idea that hasn’t quite gotten there yet. The concept is that a rake combs through the clumping litter after the cat has done its thing and lifts the clumps into a sealed compartment for later disposal. This leaves the box clean and fresh smelling.
It is a wonderful concept but not nearly so great in the usage. You have to use the highest quality clumping litter or it just breaks up instead of picking up. The brand name plastic disposal boxes are expensive. So overall, despite claims of frugality, it actually costs more to operate than a “regular” box.
Unless the cat poops in the center of the box, the rake may get stuck or dump it off to the side. Either way, the clump does not always completely end up in the plastic bin. Also, the bin must be connected just right or it may not open and the clump will be dumped on top of it and end up on the floor. I spent a lot of time cleaning up after the machine.
It is noisy. The motor and pulley system makes a rather loud raspy noise when it runs. Ours ran twice each time because it tended to get stuck the first time if there were extra large clumps. Since it was in a corner of my kitchen, this got annoying very quickly.
It has poor timing. When the bin is full, the machine will not run. In order to avoid this, there is an alarm to warn you when the box is full. It beeps. . . usually in the middle of dinner. Of course it will not stop until someone shuts it off . . . in the middle of dinner. Nor will it run again until someone dumps or changes the container . . . right after dinner.
I spent more time fooling with this box than ever with any “regular” cat box and it annoyed me most of that time. When a relay failed and it started running with kitties still in the box, that was the final straw. We saved the power supply (you never know when you might need one) and the rest of the box is growing marigolds on my patio. I think it works much better there, don’t you?
