bwestman's Full Review: LittleBigPlanet for PlayStation 3
I'm not a hardcore gamer. Okay, I play Sims2, but that's not about gaming...that's about the mommy in me wanting everyone to do what *I* say for once...without a choice. I honestly bought my PS3 because the DirecTV guy told me that it played Blu-Ray movies, just like the BluRay DVD player the salesman talked me into when I bought the big screen TV, and that I could play games on it too, for the same price as the BluRay DVD player...but I digress.
In any case, I had this nice BluRay gaming system and nary a game. My son convinced his Dad to buy me LittleBigPlanet for my birthday.
For a little while, I sat and watched my son and his fiance play...dressing their sackboys, smacking each other, making hilarious faces with each other, and running across the screen, tugging cardboard boxes, swinging on cork balls, and occasionally exploding...all in a very non-violent way. It was simply delightful!
Sackboy is a little knitted character who you guide through many, many worlds (levels), gaining new stickers, clothing, and accessories to decorate your world and your sackboy. The whole game is based largely upon physics. Sackboy can't jump amazing heights, fall tremendous depths, or otherwise defy the basic laws of physics. Through the levels, levers open doors, seesaw back and forth, boxes move, tumble, springs bounce and fire burns.
An array of devices, transports, moving floors, and other surfaces cross each level. Sackboy must find the way through the level, using a variety of basic skills like jumping, pulling, pushing, climbing, etc. If there are 2 players (or three or four), they can cooperate to open areas that can only be opened when the appropriate number of players work together.
The beauty of LittleBigPlanet is the simplicity. There is no violence (other than smacking each other on occasion, or becoming toast if you step in the fire), no blood, no profanity and no...wait...okay, there's nudity. Sackboy starts out nekkid ... sort of ( that's naked, for the non-southern Americans). He's made of knitted yarn...with a big ol' zipper up the front.
As a player, you have several choices. You can play alone, play with friends either at your house, or over the network, or you can play out in the world. In the "world" you have choices. You can play user generated levels, or you can play with other users. You can even create your own levels, but I found that far too daunting a task. It is not easy to create your own and after several failed attempts, I gave it up.
The music in the game is lively and appropos to the setting. We often find ourselves singing along. The graphics are adorable...sharp, clear, and amazing at times. While the game is a scrolling platform type game, The objects and characters are all three dimensional. It is a work of art, set to music.
In summary, the game is basically neverending as users are always creating new levels to play. Sackboy is cute, funny, and full of expression. He makes me laugh. The game is highly entertaining, and a great game for players of all ages and skill levels. My son, his fiance, and I have a wonderful time playing together. They are much better than I am, but its fun all the same. We typically only stop playing when we can no longer breathe from all the laughter.
Get it, love it, and get out there...there's a whole LittleBigPlanet to explore!
