jiastar's Full Review: Else Holmelund Minarik - Little Bear's Visit
Did you know that the Little Bear series is about 40 years old?? I didn't! I thought the cartoon was it's first manifestation as I didn't recall hearing the stories in my own youth.
"Little Bear's Visit" was originally published in 1959. It is a gentle and heartwarming book - broken into 4 chapters (each a story in itself). The illustrations are done in charming earthy pastel tones.
Grandmother and Grandfather Bear
It is a usual visit at his Grandparent's house. Little Bear is well-fed, well-loved, and having all kinds of fun with his Grandfather. That is until Grandfather falls asleep. But, that's okay because Grandmother Bear always has such lovely stories to tell.
Mother Bear's Robin
Little Bear loves to hear stories about when his mother was young. And Grandmother always has them to share. In this we learn about when Mother Bear rescued a lost baby robin, finally raising it, and letting it go free.
Goblin Story
When Grandfather wakes up he tells Little Bear another story. This is about a goblin who is frightened by sounds in the woods. It is a story which is gently spooky - and winds up with an ending sure to bring giggles.
Not Tired
The day is done. And despite trying to stay awake, Little Bear falls asleep safe in his fathers arms - Warm and very much loved.

This book makes use of simple language earning it the right to call itself an "I Can Read Book". As such, it is a perfect book to read with your youngster as they begin to recognize the printed word. It also makes a lovely bedtime book, especially as the last chapter finds Little Bear growing slowly sleepier.
What I especially like about this book are the gentle lessons it shares:
-- the value of an extended family
-- respect of one's elders
-- that there are many ways to have fun
-- that some times you have to say goodbye to someone (something) you love
-- that sometimes you have to face your fears
-- that the world is a safe and warm and loving place (or at least it should be)
All in all this makes a fine gift for any youngster, whether they love the animated series on Nick Jr. or have never seen it.
