The Diet Slaying Chocolate Hexagon of Doom
Written: Jul 15 '08 (Updated Jul 15 '08)
Pros:A somewhat great portable snack, semi hard white squiggle.
Cons:180 calories, can get smashed easily.
The Bottom Line: They aren't the best on the market but they do satisfy your craving for something sweet.
Little Debbie. If Tommy ever leaves me for another woman it will be Little Debbie. If he isn't eating one of the oatmeal cookies or some type of chocolate covered cake then he's looking for one of the illusive banana flips. The Chocolate Cupcakes can be a nice add in for a lunch or late night snack but you really do have to be careful about the quantity and frequency of consumption. Sure, they have an above average taste but if you are a Little Debbie snacker then you know that almost all of their products have some level of 'fake taste' to them. That's not to say that there is anything wrong with that but some people say that it tastes like a generic cupcake. Come on now, even a generic cupcake is still a cupcake so stop being so hard on them.
Little Debbie Chocolate Cup Cakes
It's a cupcake but its not a cupcake. It has six sides to it instead of being round so it doesn't look like your typical cupcake but when you take first bite, well, the shape of it doesn't really matter in the least. This is comparable to what other snack companies produce but I am not going to lie, it isnt as good as the premium ones for Hostess. There is a nice layer of chocolate on the top with the semi hard white squiggle across the top and inside there is a creamy filling. It isn't a gritty sugary filling but it is a nice little surprise if you have never eaten these before. I can usually take one of these down in four bites, three if I am drinking a glass of ice cold milk with it. Well, I shouldn't be drinking milk or eating these but I do anyway.
The cupcakes are individually sealed whether you buy them in the box or in the single serve packages. One of the downsides is that they can get smashed up easily if you pack them in a lunch and they get wedged between a piece of fruit and a juice box. In my truly anal days of packing lunches for day camp I would put the cupcake inside one of the small plastic containers [still in the wrapper mind you] so it wouldnt get smashed. That lasted until we ran out of the containers; no one would ever bring them home as they were too horrified that their parental unit would go to such geeky lengths to try to preserve their cupcake so it could be consumed in a pristine state. Now we just wing it and if it gets smashed up it gets tossed in the refrigerator for ten minutes until it hardens up.
If you have an extra 180 calories in your daily diet then this isnt a bad way to use them up but be warned, having just one might not be an option so stop and take the numbers into consideration when you start snacking. One cupcake is one serving and that contains 180 calories, 9 grams of fat, 26 grams of carbohydrates [18 from sugar] and 2 grams of protein. Chances are that if you are buying them by the box you are going to have a lot less will power than if you just buy one or two of them and toss them in the cart. That's where price comes into play. A single serve is .35 cents [they used to be a quarter] and the box of six is about $1.29 to $1.49 depending on where you are shopping. So you have to decide if you want to save money and buy them by the box or eliminate temptation and pay more per piece.
Now that were are back in the depths of hell [summer] and things like this can easily melt I am keeping them in one of the bottom bins of the refrigerator. That does a little to keep them around longer since everyone is used to looking in the cabinet for snacks and if they actually remember that they are in the fridge they do have to bend over to get them. Normally these aren't all that messy to eat but you will get some crumbs from them and if you like to dunk them in milk, well, then you know that bits will break off or end up in the milk itself.
The Bottom Line
For .35 cents each or about $1.40 a box you can't go wrong with these. No cupcake is ever going to be seen as something that is good for you [even the low fat or low carb ones are dangerous] but in moderation it is a nice treat. You can toss one in the bottom of a soup bowl, add some ice cream to it and have a quick dessert but it might be something that you will want to share with someone else rather than eating it alone.
As always, thanks for the visit
