Little Debbie Cloud Cakes: It's Not A Twinkie, It's Better

Pros:Better tasting than a Twinkie, individually wrapped.
Cons:There is an expiration date so observe or deal with icky taste.
The Bottom Line: Whether you are using them for desserts or with a packed lunch, the Cloud Cake is an awesome way to blow 150 calories.

The name "Cloud Cake" is a little deceiving; while technically a cake it is more of a sponge cake than an actual piece of cake. The closest comparison is of course a Twinkie; it is the same size and made the same way but personally I think that these have a better taste to them. Sometimes Twinkies have a weird 'moist' feel to them, like the inside of the sleeve is sweaty. I've never had that problem with the Cloud Cake and I am sure that if anyone else in the house did, they would let me know. I don't buy these all the time; I would if I could find them but there are only a couple of stores that sell Little Debbie products that carry them. There are ten per box and are individually wrapped so they are something that you can pack with lunches. It does help if you have a "Twinkie Keeper", an ingenious plastic container that can protect your Twinkie or Twinkie-like snack in transit.
Is it really as good as a Twinkie? To me, personally, I think that they are better. The creme / cream used to fill the cake is not gritty. There is a smoother taste to the sponge cake, to me the Twinkie comes off a little too strong. Since these are eaten out of the wrapper as well as used for desserts I want something that I can use for both applications; that's why I keep buying the Cloud Cakes when I can find them. The box has a dispenser type flap on the side, this never gets used and it really irks me because whoever gets their hands on the box first ends up ripping then end of it open instead of using the flap so the box can be resealed. While this might not seem like a big deal to some people, to me it is. Having the box in one solid piece means added protection in case something in the cabinet ends up getting knocked over and lands on the box. Squished Cloud Cakes are not that visually appealing.
The normal selling price on the Little Debbie Cloud Cakes are $3.09 a box; my local Family Dollar sells them for 2 / $5.00 so you can save a little if you are going to get two. The shelf life on a box depends on how often the Little Debbie guy swings by the store where you are getting them. You can find the "best by" date on the side flap; the ones I picked up a couple weeks ago are guaranteed fresh through July 4 but the empty box shows that these are fast movers here. I've never tried freezing them but I do use them as mini desserts with some freshly sliced strawberries or to make Slacker Tiramisu. I have never seen these sold individually but I wouldn't really trust getting them that way because they are soft and spongy and you never know when people have been squeezing them or doing other odd things with them. Yeah, best not to go into detail about that.
While less expensive than Twinkie, it suffers from the same caloric problem. One Cloud Cake is considered one serving; that contains 150 calories, 4 grams of fat, 28 grams of carbohydrates and 1 gram of protein. I have to be honest here, I can off two or three of these in a sitting if I am not careful. Quoting Zombieland's Columbus "One and done" should be the tagline for these, right under the words, "Little Debbie Has A Snack For You". Did you catch that amazing Twinkie tie in with the Zombieland mention? Even though these are 150 calories each, in moderation they aren't deadly. I mentioned using these with some fresh cut strawberries; that will add some calories to the overall count but skip adding sugar to them to get them 'juicy' because that bumps the whole thing up to about 300 calories.
