| heatherhh's Full Review: Little Kids Bubblin' Glitter Fish |
As much as toddlers like watching Mommy blow bubbles, most want to give it a try themselves. But typical bubble wands are beyond the typical toddler. 1) Dip the wand so that the ring has a film over it. 2) Angle it just right. 3) Blow in the right direction with the right amount of force. 4) Voila! Bubbles! My toddlers rarely made it to step 4.
So, when I spotted the Little Kids Bubblin Glitter Fish and the Little Kids Bubblin Jumpin Frog when my children were 3 1/2 yrs and 21 months, I thought they looked like a wonderful alternative to blowing bubbles myself or holding a wand while my oldest tried it himself.
What Is It?
This is a fish-shaped bubble blower. The fishs tail is placed in your mouth for blowing, while at the other end, the fishs mouth has a bubble ring mounted on it. You dip the bubble ring into the solution, put the blowing end in your mouth, and blow. Voila, bubbles! But more than bubbles
Every time you blow, the glittery fins on the side of the fish flap. Included is a small bottle of bubble solution and a small dipping tray.
Childrens Opinions
My 21-month-old was able to figure this out pretty quickly, even though its recommended for age 3 and up. The mouth piece is flared and was easy for her to close her mouth around. She found this one much easier to use than the jumpin frog, which she found impossible. She needed some help with dipping, but other than that, she was blowing bubbles on her own. There is no way she could have done that with a standard bubble wand. This toy eliminates the need to pay attention to the angle of the wand and force/direction of the blow. An easy light blow on the mouthpiece was all that was needed to produce bubbles.
My daughter also liked the glittery fluttering fins.
Practical Issues, Or Mommys Opinion
The little dipping trays are small and very shallow. You have to hold the blower straight when dunking it, or the ring wont get covered with a film. This was especially a problem for my 21-month-old, but even for my 3 1/2-year-old. But also, you had to keep filling up the tray because it was so shallow. On the plus side, theres less to spill. On the negative side, we were adding solution every couple minutes. We ended up getting small rubbermaid containers and filling those with solution instead.
Summary
This is a really neat idea that allows even very little ones to blow bubbles on their own, though you may need to help with dipping. Despite the lousy dipping tray, I give it a 5-star. This is easy to use, even for the very young. It works much better than the jumpin' frog. I would recommend using another container for dipping though.
