Note: I originally wrote this review back in the year 2000 it is now 2004 and I had to just put a little note in here about the durability of this product. My children and I were cleaning out their toy box in the basement and I came across this Fisher price farm. Although most of the animals and accessories are long gone, the ones that remain still look as good as new. The barn itself is still in one piece and as sturdy as ever. And I can guarantee that any toy in my kids toy box has not been treated gingerly. This goes to show that this is a well made and durable toy that can stand the test of time. Now for the original review.
Fisher Price Little People Farm:
Why Does Mom Like It Best?
The reason I like it best is because it is a nice size toy and can hold all of its accessories inside of it. I also like it because all the pieces are solid. You dont have to worry about parts breaking off. All of the accessories are large enough that you dont have to worry about them being a choking hazard. You can also use the farm to teach your children about farm animals, and how they live and eat, and what farmers do on a daily basis.
There is almost no assembly, and no batteries are required. Woo Hoo!
Why Do The Kids Like It?
Kids like this toy because it contains some of their favorite things, animals. There are also a lot of windows, doors and gate that opens and closes. This seems to really fascinate kids. The kids also really love the tractor and trailer. That can be played with completely separately. There is a circular hole where the little people farmer can sit and not fall off.
The Farm
The farm itself is made up of a very sturdy plastic. It is of course bright red and has white trim. The kids can play with the farm shut by using the door and windows or they can open it up and the barn is like a real barn with pens for the animals, a roosting spot for the chicken or rooster (I am not sure which it is, it looks like a rooster, but the place for it to go looks like some place a chicken would lay eggs, oh well), and a hay loft.
The doors and windows swing opened and closed as I mentioned before. Also the gates on the pens swing opened and shut. There are 4 pens. When the children are done playing with the farm they can simply put the animals back in and close it up for next time (this would of course be in an ideal world where kids actually picked up and put away all of their toys with out mom or dad losing their voice reminding them.) The farm has a latch that holds the farm shut and a sturdy carrying handle. So if your kids wanted to bring it to Grandmas house it would be easy to transport.
The Accessories
The farm comes with 8 animals: Cow, pig, Rooster/chicken?, sheep, horse, goat, cat, and bunny. I dont know why there is not a dog, I think a farm should have a dog. Oh well. There is also a farmer. I wish that the farmer had a wife that way there would be two characters so that more than one child could pretend to work on the farm at once. All of the characters are adorable and they are made of a thick sturdy plastic material.
The farm also comes with a pen that can be placed outside of the barn. There is also a tractor, and a trailer to haul vegetables. It also comes with a little thing of pretend lettuce, and some hay.
The Sounds
The following areas of the barn make sounds:
1. If you press on the rooster bed, there is a rooster crowing sound.
2. If you put the hen in her next you can hear her cluck.
3. Open one door and you can hear the cow moo, open the other door and you can hear the horse ney.
4. Press on Farmer Jed's work bench and you can hear a sawing sound.
Downside
The only downside I see with this is that since there is only one person I find that the kids fight about who want to be him all the time. It seems nobody wants to pretend to be an animal. Also there is no dog. What is up with that? Ok, I guess most people wouldnt care about the absence of a dog but it just ruffles my feathers. Of course Im kidding, maybe.
Price:
I have seen this particular toy sell for $24.99 and I have also seen it sell for $29.99. I think that it is well worth the price. We have had ours for about a year now and it still looks great. Most Fisher Price toys are pretty durable and this one does not seem to be an exception.
Conclusion
This is a great toy, it has so many possibilities and the kids usually spend a great deal of time playing with it once they decide to bring it out. As I said before it would be nice if there was another person so more than one child could pretend to be working on the farm at a time. The biggest pluses for parents are of course the fact that there is pretty much no assembly (accept for outside pen) and it doesnt require batteries. So this is a nice quite toy that wont cost you any money after the initial purchase. My kids received this farm for Christmas last year. I am planning on buying two of them for some other children I know this year. I am sure the parent will be grateful that they wont have to buy batteries.
