*sigh* Fisher-Price Little People are one of my favorite children's toy lines, but this ship sank fast. I actually bought the Fisher-Price Little People Floaty Boat on my sister's recommendation, as it was one of the first bath toys that my nephew got, and in theory, it is adorable. At the time, we had few bath toys, and I was desperate for a winner.
::: What You Do Get :::
The Fisher-Price Little People Floaty Boat is essentially a really cute "pleasure boat" plus accessories. The boat itself is approximately 9½ inches long by 6 inches wide, and about 5 inches tall at it's top-most point (and bear with me... I'm estimating using a dollar bill). The boat itself is blue plastic, with a yellow front part (and no, I don't know ANY boat terminology) and a white bench in the read.
The boat itself has three main areas:
• The rear of the boat (sorry I can't remember the nautical term) is the "fishing" area, which has a little sitting area that any Little People can fit into for fishing. There is an attached orange fishing pole with a hook, that leaves me wondering what was Fisher Price thinking?? Not safe for children under 3, although the package says okay. When I actually let this toy in the tub, my kids were constantly hooking themselves and each other with it. You don't want to imagine this in a nostril.
• The front area of the boat under the yellow section is like a counter with two sides that flips over. One side is meant to be a sleeping berth and the other side is the command center of the boat. Both of these areas AND the fishing area are made even cuter with small details like molded plastic painted like pretzels and pizza... more realism for the kids, which I do appreciate.
• The third area is the raised yellow platform you can see in the picture. When I first unpacked the boat, I decided this was somewhere for a Little Person to "survey her domain" as she fits in the little depressed area perfectly. But no, this is actually a shower as I found once I actually read the box. Use the enclosed lobster to scoop the water up and your Little People can take a shower.
Accessories included are the red lobster scoop mentioned above, a green plastic blowfish that squirts water, and a purple hippopotamus float ring that Little People can float in, sort of like a hippo inner tube, as well as a Little Person. In our older version of the toy, it appears to be a genderless version of either Eddie or Sarah, dressed in a sleeveless tee and shorts, and looking altogether like a Florida tourist.
::: What You Don't Get :::
Unfortunately, what you don't get with this set is a seaworthy vessel. Not only is the shower I mentioned above a bad idea, but the SLIGHTEST splashing by your toddler sends this Titanic to the bottom of the tub faster than you can say Leonardo DiCaprio. "Floaty" Boat it isn't.
I'm also not really thrilled with either the hook, as I mentioned above, nor the fish squirty thing, because as we all know, eventually, anything that takes water in and doesn't dump it right out grows and festers mildew. I don't think this little guy will be any different, so you are stuck with widening the hole to make sure all the water that gets in gets out, or you'll be tossing poor little green fish. We also found that the Fisher-Price Little People Floaty Boat needed frequent trips through the dishwasher, as mildew easily collected in all the nooks and crannies, especially where the front section "flips."
Our experience was that the Little Person was the biggest hit about this set, but I could have pulled one from another set. It's done a lot better with the kids since it became a sandbox toy, as it can't sink in the sand.
Final analysis: I think the Fisher-Price Little People Floaty Boat is the S.S. Minnow from Gilligan's Island, because the Little People always end up castaways.
