A year ago, before my daughter's 2nd birthday, my mother-in-law had asked for gift ideas to give to Courtney at her upcoming birthday party. I knew that Courtney would be getting a lot of toys and I knew I was going to have a problem storing them all because she already had so many as it was. I decided to research different toy chests and see what would work the best for us. Now, Courtney already had a toy chest but it was a bookshelf/toy chest combo unit and it held more books than it did toys. After doing some surfing and reading up on different models, I decided to ask my mother-in-law to get Courtney the Little Tikes Giant Toy Chest.
All About the Little Tikes Giant Toy Chest
The Little Tikes Giant Toy Chest is quite a large toy chest measuring about 40 x 24 inches on the outside and the inside is about 12 inches deep. The toy chest is white molded plastic and has a huge picture of a bunch of toys engraved on both the front and back side. The lid on ours is pink because we have a little girl but you can also buy a blue lidded one if you have a little boy. The lid doesn't have any hinges. You can either keep the lid on and remove it when you want to get into the toy chest or just keep it off permanently. We keep ours off and just store it in the back of Courtney's closet to keep it out of the way. Included with the Little Tikes Giant Toy Chest are 2 yellow dividers that fit into slats inside the toy chest, which is suppose to help you organize the toys if you wish.
Assembly was pretty easy although it did require 2 people and a rubber mallet. The rubber mallet is for hammering corner joists so that the front, back and the 2 sides of the toy chest are connected. We used the rubber mallet instead of a hammer so that we didn't damage the plastic and it also gave us a bigger striking head to work with. You really do need to pound the corner joists quite hard to get them to stay and not just pop up on the other side and it did take a little bit of work but considering how hard some of her other toys are to put together, we found the process not too bad. I would have to say that it took about 15 to 20 minutes to have the Little Tikes Giant Toy Chest assembled and ready to go.
Why We Recommend the Little Tikes Giant Toy Chest
First off, I just have to say how HUGE the Little Tikes Giant Toy Chest is! This baby holds a ton of toys! It has definitely served it's purpose quite well and because we choose to keep our lid off all the time, we can pile even more toys in it. This has been such a space saver because at the moment we don't have a dedicated play room so our daughter's toys are in our livingroom and diningroom (the 2 rooms are joined together, separated only by sliding doors which we keep open at all times). As you can imagine, I have to keep her toys organized because this is also where we hang out the most and where we entertain when we have friends and family over. So far, I've been able to do that by packing away toys as she outgrows them and by having the Little Tikes Giant Toy Chest to store the ones she does play with.
Another reason why I recommend the Little Tikes Giant Toy Chest is because of the sheer durability of it. This toy chest is made out of extremely heavy duty plastic and it can withstand any amount of abuse a child throws at it. It also cleans very easily and if you can't seem to get out any dirt with damp cloth then clean it with a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser Sponge and it will look brand new in no time!
There are a couple of minor cons which didn't affect my rating but I felt should be mentioned. First, the lid is quite heavy and a small child would have a hard time removing it off the top of the toy chest. Also, in the case of our daughter, a child could climb on top of it and could be hurt if they fall off. Like I mentioned above, our solution was to keep the lid off permanently and just store it away. This has also enabled us to be able to store even more toys in the Little Tikes Giant Toy Chest. Another minor con is that the dividers just won't stay up no matter what we do and I found that the dividers actually hinder you from being able to put some toys in the toy chest. By dividing the space inside into 3 parts, you are essentially limiting yourself to putting only small toys in the toy chest. We don't bother with the dividers at all but that doesn't mean we haven't found a use for them! My brilliant daughter thinks they're railroad tracks (and yes, they do kind of look like them too!) and will put her toy trains on them and use them as if they really were tracks. She thinks that they're great and who am I to tell her different? I know that if I were to buy her a railroad set, she would get frustrated every time the tracks came apart and she wouldn't end up having as much fun. This way, even though the dividers aren't being used as they were meant to be, they still serve a purpose in our home.
Overall, I can't recommend the Little Tikes Giant Toy Chest enough. If you need a toy chest that will store a lot of toys, big or small, then this is the toy chest for you! Forget the age recommendations too because this toy chest can be used for years and years and will probably still be around for when I have grandchildren coming over to play!
