| Freak369's Full Review: Little Tikes Glowin Animal Flashlight |
Most kids love to play with flashlights. When the brood were younger they would get their hands on a flashlight and play with it until the batteries were dead. More often than not they would be using them as lightsabers or for hunting for bugs when the sun started to set. I really wish that they had something like this when they were younger; the My First Flashlight was something that they got a tremendous amount of use from but it wasn't as cute as these animal themed flashlights.
Little Tikes Glowin' Animal Themed Flashlights
These are kid-friendly flashlights with a very cute animal theme and since there are more than a few designs to choose from its a good bet that you will be able to find one that is perfect for your child. They have a really nice look to them and even if your child bangs it around to it gets tossed into a toy box, the scratches and scuffs are minimal. The only time I ever had one break was when it got tossed down a flight of stairs, hit the landing and then went down another flight. After that the mouth section wouldn't open and when we did manage to pry it open it wouldn't stay open, there was no sound and the light didn't work.
That's not something that happens often because these things are built to last; the two flights of steps were hardwood and I am pretty sure it hit a wall at some point in time. Any of the Glowin' Animals that we have had or that I have bought for kids have all stood the test of time and that is one of the main reasons why I keep buying them. I really wish they would make a monkey because I have a friend that collects monkey themed things and he would get a huge kick out of it. As it stands, the animals that are offered are cute, kid- friendly and the sounds that they make aren't the least bit scary.
What are the different types of animals that you can get? So far I have seen seven different styles but I am sure that I missed a few. The cutest has to be the pig but the cow is rather adorable with the spots. The dinosaur was a big hit with Jackson but I thought for sure he would really go for the alligator since it's green and that seems to be one of his all time favorite colors. You can also get this very cute flashlight in a zebra, tiger or leopard design. Each animal has its own respective sound that is made when the light is activated; how freakin' cute is it when the dinosaur roars or the tiger roars.
These are recommended for children ages 18 months and older but I have had kinds a little over a year old see someone use it once and pick up on how it works. As long as someone is nearby in case said child starts banging away on things with it, everything should be cool. These aren't exactly the lightest things in the way of flashlights, the ones that I have purchased have come with tester batteries that lasted longer than expected but the two C sized batteries do add some weight to it. The battery cover has that slightly annoying safety screw but it is there to protect kids so I deal with it.
You can get these at places like Wal-Mart and Target for about ten dollars but be sure to look for the sales that they have on Little Tike items; sometimes you can get coupons for them through the Toys 'R Us sales flyer but those are for use only at the Toys 'R Us stores. Are they worth it? To me they are but if it seems like too much of an investment there are some knock off ones that you can go with that cost less but you arent going to get something that is going to be able to keep up with active kids. I'd rather spend ten or eleven dollars one time than five or six dollars five or six times.
The Bottom Line
I love the size of the flashlights and that they are great for kids to use; Jackson likes to sneak up on people and press the button but if you don't act surprised by the roar he does get a little irked. To me these are unisex toys that little boys or girls could have fun with; the light is a little stronger than you might think but the sound it makes isn't loud and obnoxious. When the batteries start to die the sounds can project in a strange way and of course the light will start to dither. If you are looking for a well made flashlight that is going to last a long time, these are a really good pick but be sure that the specific animal you pick out is going to be something that your child likes.
While this might not be an issue at this point in time, some of the animals in the series were recalled due to excessive levels of lead in the paint. You can read more about it and get the lot numbers here:
