| brooklynsmum's Full Review: Little Tikes Glowin??? Lion Flashlight |
My daughter has always loved playing with flashlights. Perhaps its the outdoorsy camper coming out in her or perhaps its her fear of the dark, but either way my oldest daughter has had her fair share of them in the past six years. Two years ago she received the Little Tikes Glowin Lion Flashlight for her birthday. While other flashlights disappeared into the bottom of her toy chest, this one made stuck around until we simply refused to replace the batteries in him.
The Little Tikes Glowin Lion Flashlight is a great starter flashlight for kids. It isnt too heavy and yet is sturdy enough to withstand a toddler beating. At first glance it looks like a plastic lion with a handle on his back, but when kids pick him up and squeeze the handle, his mouth opens revealing the flashlight and emitting a cute roar. If the handle is squeezed hard enough, his mouth stays open, locking in place and allowing the light to shine through. Squeeze the handle again and his mouth closes shutting off the light at the same time. Little Tikes has developed a line of animal flashlights similar to the Glowin Lion which includes a Tiger, Dog, Bear, Pig, Zebra, Dino, Elephant, Hippo, and Cow. Some of these can even be found paired up in two packs for about $14.99. Individually they cost about $9.99.
THE GOOD
One of the main reasons we encouraged our daughter to lose the other flashlights and hang onto this one is the fact that the light automatically shuts off after two minutes. She falls asleep fairly quickly and tends to use her flashlights as nightlights, falling asleep and forgetting to turn them off. This was perfect for her. It usually gave her the time she needed, but didnt stay on all night long draining expensive batteries. On those occasions when she wasnt finished with it before the auto shut off, she simply turned it back on for another round.
Like most Little Tikes toys, we found the Glowin Lion to be quite sturdy. He eventually made his way into the toy room, where toys take a lot of abuse. Hes been dropped many times and yet he still looks (and works) as well as he did when she first got him. Furthermore, he is very cute. I love the fact that this is definitely a kids flashlight. Even his roar, although annoying once you hear it over and over, is rather cute.
I was happy to find that something so cute can also be so functional. While some of the other kid flashlights we owned emitted a weak light beam at best, this flashlight definitely is powerful enough to light up a path. Perhaps this is due to the larger C size batteries, which leads me to the not so good points.
THE NOT SO GOOD
As much as I love this flashlight, I eventually got tired of replacing batteries. The Glowin Lion takes two C sized batteries (not included), which can be accessed by opening the battery compartment with a Philips screwdriver. Since we dont usually stock this size of battery in our house, it was never convenient to replace them. Even though each set lasted several months, after awhile when the novelty wore off, we simply moved the flashlight to the basement toy room hoping hed be forgotten. Surprisingly enough, my daughter didnt seem to notice the missing lion, although I still notice him out on several occasions, likely after being taken along on some pretend excursion. I guess hes just as valuable to my girls as a toy as he is as a light source.
MY RECOMMENDATION
This flashlight is definitely worth the money if you are looking for a good quality first flashlight. The auto off feature is a must for very small children, and the fact that he can be easily turned on and off by toddlers (unlike the twist on and off type) is another bonus.
Recommended for ages 1 ½ and up.
