| sharond's Full Review: Little Tikes High Back Toddler Swing |
When my daughter was a baby, four years ago, we purchased a toddler swing, the Fisher Price swing. We loved it and it was still in very good condition when my son was big enough for it. He loves to swing and we were very happy we still had Amanda's toddler swing. I had sold many things in a garage sale so we had to buy a lot of things for Jacob when he was born. Last summer, the Fisher Price swing was great for Jacob, but this year, it did not work out so well...My son is extremely active, he just hates to sit still for more than two minutes. The Fisher Price swing did not come with a seat belt, so when I turned my back for two seconds, he stood up in the swing and gave his momma a heart attack!
This is when I decided to shop around for a new swing that had a seat belt...not that they stop him from standing up but at least they slow him down so when I see him trying to stand, I can get him out. I found the Graco High Back Toddler Swing and decided to try it out. It looked pretty similar to the one I had with the added bonus of an adjustable seat belt. I was also pleased that it can be easily attached to an existing swingset.
When we got it home and set it up, Jacob sat in it for ten whole minutes, swinging happily! I was in heaven! No chasing him, no worrying he will fall and hurt himself! Just ten whole minutes to relax and watch him happily swinging away! Then he was tired of swinging and tried to stand up, and I am happy to report that the belt did slow down that process considerably! You should never leave a child alone while he or she is in the swing obviously, but you can't help having to turn your head for a second, especially when you have other children clammering for attention.
I also love that the ropes to this swing are very heavy and durable, yet they are comfortable to hold onto. The ropes that came with the Fisher Price swing weren't smooth and Jacob didn't like to hold on to them. They are also very long so if you have a high-adventure loving child such as Jacob, you can swing them a bit higher than other toddler swings I have seen.
The high back on the swing is nice for when you are trying to get your toddler to settle down and go to sleep, although this is one feature where it doesn't measure up to my Fisher Price swing. The back on this one doesn't come up as high, and a taller child may not be able to rest the back of their head against it. But it is high enough so they can lean back, relax and enjoy the ride. Jacob unfortunately doesn't do this...but I can remember way back when I had a toddler that actually would sit and relax. Also, the leg holes in the swing are wide so even the chubbiest baby can sit comfortably.
The seat itself is heavy duty plastic so it will hold up well in all kinds of weather and sun. It also has holes in the bottom of the seat so if it rains, the water will drain out and not sit and become stagnant. I like this feature a lot! It helps to keep it much cleaner and looking new. It is also very easy to get your little angel in and out of this swing, even when they aren't acting quite angelic!
All in all, this is a great swing. If only they would make one with a five-point harness so my little Houdini would have an even tougher time climbing out of it!
