The Little Tykes race car bed has finally been dismantled and sits in pieces in my garage waiting for me to advertise it on ebay. It is a sad thought this passing of the Little Tykes car bed era. My son has now spent his first nights in his “big boy bed” which is pine and matches his other bedroom furniture. It is a mature portrait of a growing boy's childhood room.
I remember when we first bought the race car bed. It was after we decided our son was ready to move from the crib to a bed. It was an exciting time and we were so proud of him the first night he slept in it. He made "zoom zoom" noises for a long time before he drifted off. We took pictures of him fast asleep. You should have seen the delight in his eyes the first time he saw it assembled. We had broken down his crib and set up the car bed in his room without him knowing. We loved surprising him. It was a very special day for all of us. There was no transition trauma do to the fun theme of the bed. He never once gave a second thought about the trade.
What it is:
The Little Tykes bed is made of plastic and is designed to look like a racing car complete with wheels and racing stickers. The bed sports a bookshelf as the head board and convenient storage toy chest in the front. This is terrific if you need a place to hide away balls, trucks, and other toys. It is deep and accommodates a lot of items. IMPORTANT: It is designed so that the sides are higher than the mattress. This design feature is wonderful as it prevents your child from rolling off the mattress onto the floor without use of a guardrail. My son never fell out of his bed which I know is a frequent thing for some children who are making the transition. It fits a twin mattress which sits inside the bed and you must have a support for your mattress to be secure.
The only thing I didn’t like about the car bed is that it is very long. My son’s room is 10 x 10 and the length of the bed interfered with the opening of our door. If I put it against a different wall it extended to the window. The third wall wasn’t an option as it has a closet and the fourth wall has a mural painting. You should take measurements before purchasing to prevent this problem. Thought the mattress size is a twin the length of the bed exceeds the length of the mattress by about a foot and a half.
Conclusion
This was a very big milestone that the Little Tykes car shared with us, first the exchange of the crib for the bed, and finally the exchange of the car bed for a big boy bed. It is forever implanted in our memories and even now my son says, "remember when I slept in my race car bed?" We loved it and you will too!
