| pitfaltina's Full Review: Littlest Pet Shop - Pet Pairs: Pug and Chihuahua F... |
Santa Claus left this Pet Pairs set under our tree one Christmas night after guzzling a gallon of milk and eating three dozen cookies. How DOES that man get in his sleigh at the end of the night? And those poor reindeer!
This is one of the very first Littlest Pet Shop toys we acquired and remains one of my daughter's all time favorite sets. Thanks to all those celebrities who prance around with miniature chihuahuas in purses, my daughter learned that carrying around a tiny puppy in a handbag is the very height of coolness and wanted this set so she could do the same. Yet another reason to dislike Paris Hilton, as if the world needed another one!
The chihuahua, who was named "Perro" by my daughter, stands just 2 inches tall. He is beige with rust brown patches and features a bobblehead and a magnet in his front paws. "Perro" is Spanish for dog. I really need to help my daughter name these pets less, ummm, obviously! "Perro" has a head that is a bit too big for his body and sometimes he falls over.
The other pet in this set is a bulldog-looking puppy who was given the clever name of "Ruff". Who'da thought of that name for a dog? *sigh* "Ruff" is just over 2 inches tall and is white with orange-brown ears and rump. He also has a bobblehead and has a magnet in his left paw.
"Perro" and "Ruff" need those paw magnets, because this set also includes a fire hydrant-shaped box. The fire hydrant has a paw print on the front that conceals a magnet and a lid that swings open. You must use a pet's magnetic paw in order to open the lid of the box. Inside the fire hydrant, the storage space is pretty negligible. We can fit a couple of tiny dog collars inside, or we can put in the dog toys that come with this set. Hasbro gets an A++ in durability, because my daughter has opened the fire hydrant with a pet paw hundreds of times and it still works perfectly. My daughter loves that feature and wishes Hasbro would make more LPS toys with magnet features.
Two dog toys are included...a rope toy and a knotted rag toy. They both fit comfortably inside the fire hydrant but have no other purpose, as none of the dogs can hold them or bite them. Maybe if they had a magnet inside them, my daughter would attach them to the dogs' paws and use them. As it is, these pieces are usually to be found neglected at the bottom of the cavernous toy box.
Both pets are relatively easy to clean with a sanitized wipe or even a spritz of hair spray. (Hair spray works wonders on all vinyl toys, in case you're interested!) For parents who are worried about the recent magnets-in-toys scare and subsequent recall, stop worrying. We've never had a magnet come loose from any Littlest Pet Shop toy.
The chihuahua can sit comfortably in the Twirlaround Treehouse. Poor "Ruff", on the other hand, is a bit too big to play there. He hangs out at the doghouse instead with all the other pooches.
This set was definitely worth the $4 we paid for it, because every time we leave the house, I see a tiny chihuahua head peeking out of my daughter's miniscule purse. No other pet gets so much attention!
