Freak369's Full Review: Lobot - LEGO Star Wars Figure
Sometimes you come across a Lego mini figure that you really like but there are aspects of it that just don't sit very well with you. Lobot had the potential to be an awesome figure but when only half of it has the detail that it deserves, well, you have to wonder why the designers only went half way with it. Now, I understand that Lobot wasn't all that fashionable but if you are going to go through the trouble to recreate the BioTech Industries cybernetic implant then why not add some detail to the torso? Sure, there are some stenciled wrinkles and pockets on the torso but nothing on the pants. Resellers have you over the barrel with this one because Lobot only appeared in one Star Wars Lego set. If you want to get Lobot, expect to pay about five dollars for a mint condition figure.
One of the biggest problems with Lobot is that he is often misrepresented or mistaken for another figure. The head piece for Lobot is a one of a kind item, simply put, the only way to get this specific piece is to get the Lobot figure in the Twin-Pod Cloud Car set. You can buy the head piece only from brick brokers and vendors but you are going to pay about four dollars for just that specific element. That of course means that you are going to have to have a body to put the head peg on. The suggested retail price for the Twin-Pod Cloud Car set is about fifteen dollars but you can find it for less if you aren't worried about the condition of the box.
There are things that you can do to enhance the look of the Lobot mini figure but you will have to use a permanent marker to get good results. There are sites that sell overlays that you can apply over the blank spots on the legs or torso. If you swap out the torso with a plain gray one you can have some extra creative freedom but you do have to keep in mind that you are dealing with a small area. Please be advised, if you plan on entering your creation in to a Lego competition, modification could disqualify your entry. It's also important to know that using permanent markers on figures should only be done if you are sure that you want to modify the look; the ink does not come off easily and using an industrial ink remover on the plastic could change the color of it.
What could be done to improve the overall look of the Lobot figure? I would love to see a wider cyborg band; as it stands you can't see it when you are looking at the figure dead on. Then again, if I were designing this piece I would have went with a snap on piece instead of something that is stenciled. Having a snap on piece would give the figure a lot nicer look and make it more realistic. Even though this figure was only featured in one set, that is no excuse for the designers to drop the ball on it. Even though Lobot went almost completely overlooked by collectors, I am not alone in voicing my opinion about the lack of attention that was given to this mini figure.
If you are buying this online you will want to make sure that you are actually going to get Lobot and not a knock off figure. Without being able to see several images of the head you won't know if you are going to get the actual Lobot piece with the cyborg panel on the back and the face on the front or just some random head piece. Personally, I wouldn't spend more than a few dollars on this figure because there aren't many uses for it – I mean, there are other cyborg drones but there is only one Lobot so unless you plan on creating a fantasy scene with an army or legion of mechanically enhanced figures, having just one is fine. If you can't find Lobot as a solo figure you can get the Twin Pod Cloud Car set or try to make your own and buy the head piece separately.
