I like it (Reply to this comment)

I still recall growing up in Pgh, skipping school and calling the local distributer to deliver a case of IC quarts for 'my Dad' and finishing it with my friends. Great stuff as I recall. Next time I go to Pittsburgh you can be sure I'll be drinking an Iron. It's part of the local lore.

Bless your jarhead soul. If half the folks in town had your attitude, there wouldn't be a problem!

Iron City= Good to the last drop (Reply to this comment)

Being born and raised in the 'Burgh for 22 years until I joined the Marine Corps I always drank I.C. Light and Iron City. Now, I'm stationed in Southern California with all these Mexican Cervezas and fruity tasting beers. I look forward to going home and going straight to the JR's Distributors in Rochester and buying a case of I.C.light.

Re: Support Your Local Brewery (Reply to this comment)

If Pittsburgh is still making the Wainwright beers, I don't expect they're making much of them, or that they're advertising. They're fighting to stay alive, and that means Iron City is the main focus.
I have to say that Independence and Poor Henry's screwed themselves. Indy spent money foolishly and never attained any kind of focus; Henry's chased sales that never materialized and didn't keep their quality up. You can't blame the majors for that. As for distribution, the micros must find their own, viable distribution channels, or they will die. Real simple.

Support Your Local Brewery (Reply to this comment)
by Char0Mulcahy
Hey Lew,
Is Iron City still making the J.W. Wainwright products? I remember tasting one of their ales at the Iron City Beer Festival back in 1996 and it wasn't bad. Totally agree with your editorial comments about supporting your local breweries. Seeing Poor Henry's here in Philadelphia shut their doors was a shame since they presented a decent food and great beer selection and the same could be said of Independence's Brewery's Franklinfest. You know there was going to be a shakeout in the beer business but it seems to have been accelerated by the exclusive distribution tactics practiced by the big three rather than the overextension of capital by the micros. Care to comment?

For some reason, PA people have done better than any other state. We have six of these locals left, including Straub, up near you in St. Marys. I love these old places, and supporting them is a passion for me.

alive. When I was a kid there was one in Erie Pa., Koehler Brewing now closed. But my dad would buy a case every Friday. Unfortunately not enough people did, and now it's gone.
Excellent review Lew!! Thanks for reminding me of that great old brew!

Hey, Little Kings is coming back! There's money behind the brand, and I think it's got a good shot. If it can work for Yuengling, it can work for them. We may be seeing the high-water mark for big beer; God, I hope!
Cheers!

It is the Iron City (Reply to this comment)

Lew: I had some of this brew myself way back in college in Ohio, all the steelworkers and sons of steelworkers drank it. If not they drank Pabst, Hamms, Goebbels, and Little Kings. Tasted like the Schaefer of my dad back home. Great beer editorial. Should be required reading for Bud people.

Heh, "capicola and cheese," that's what I like the most about Primanti's. Every sammich on the menu is "xxx and cheese," and at the bottom of the menu is the little note: "Extra cheese, 25¢." I love this town.
