Logan's Roadhouse is a part of the CBRL group that also owns Cracker Barrel restaurant. The first Logan's opened in 1991, and they are based in Nashville, TN. They are located in 17 states, mostly southern, but there are some locations in Ohio, California, and Michigan.
Atmosphere
Logan's is designed like the old roadhouses of the 40s and 50s. It is adorned with lots of wood and neon lights both inside and out, and a continuous stream of god-awful country music plays in the background. The restaurant here in Johnson City is divided into 2 sections inside. There is a large bar on the right side of the restaurant and the dining area is on the left. The bar area is sectioned off by a half-wall, and there are booths along the outer edges of the wall. The bar also has hardwood floors to give it that "roadhouse" feel.
The entrance is between the bar and dining areas. This is where the host area is. It is very open and it contains a big barrel of peanuts. If there is a wait, there are wooden benches to sit on. The kitchen is behind the host area. There are windows along the back wall so that you can see the food being prepared.
The dining area has what looks like a dark concrete floor. It consists mostly of booths with a few tables here and there with a bucket of peanuts on every table. There are many neon beer signs covering the walls and some race memorabilia and don't be surprised if you find peanut shells on the floor.
Service
The service here is always great. We have never had bad service at this restaurant. We are immediately greeted when we enter Logan's and the servers are always upbeat and friendly. It is common to see staff members helping out in different areas. A manager almost always comes by the table to ask how the meal was.
What to Eat
After a big helping of peanuts, they bring a tray of fluffy, homemade yeast rolls with honey butter. These things practically melt in your mouth.
I always order an appetizer when I eat at Logan's because that is my favorite part of the meal there. My favorites are the hot wings, cheese sticks, and the buffalo chicken tenders. They also have potato skins, nachos, and chili on the appetizer menu, or you can go all out and get a sampler platter.
They have a large variety of salads to choose from. Most salads have a variation of greens and other vegetables with choice of meat. You can choose from the T-Bone salad, mesquite-grilled chicken, Southwest tortilla chili, fried chicken, Logan's club, or the mesquite-grilled salmon Caesar salad. I've never ordered a salad for my meal since most meals come with a dinner salad.
Logan's is best known for steaks. They have T-Bones, Rib-eye, Chopped Sirloin Steak, NY Strip, Filet Mignon, Pork Chops, and Prime Rib, to name a few. They come with a side and dinner salad. My husband usually gets a 9 oz Sirloin, which is his favorite. He orders it medium or medium well, but it usually arrives overcooked.
I'm not a big steak fan, so I look at the chicken and seafood section of the menu. They have a variety of chicken and seafood entrees to choose from. You can get the chicken with teriyaki sauce, mesquite-grilled, or BBQ. They have mesquite-grilled or fried shrimp as well as the catch of the day. If it's a sandwich you're after, they have burgers and other sandwiches, like the grilled chicken sandwich, club sandwich, roast beef, and buffalo chicken sandwich. I've had the buffalo chicken sandwich, and I was pleased with it. Their buffalo sauce is really good. I usually order the Teriyaki chicken, which comes over rice with a pineapple on top. The teriyaki sauce is good, but the chicken is usually flavorless. Sometimes it reminds me of dishwater. The best part of the entrée is usually the dinner salad that comes with it.
I'm usually filled up on peanuts, appetizers, rolls, salad, and dishwater chicken, so I don't get dessert, but they have peanut butter ice-cream pie, hot fudge brownies, apple cobbler, and NY-style cheesecake. Next time, I'm going to forego the dishwater chicken and try the brownie.
What about kids?
They have a menu just for kids that they bring with crayons to keep them occupied. Kids can choose from chicken tenders, mac and cheese, hot dogs, hamburgers for about $3 to $4. My son has had the chicken and the macaroni, and he was very happy with both. Plus he loves to play with the peanuts.
Overall
Like other places that focus primarily on steaks, Logan's is somewhat lacking in other areas. They have little variety outside the steak department. The only other entree options are chicken and a few seafood dishes. The price for most entrees ranges from $9 to $12 or up to $20 for steaks. We usually dine for about $35 when we get an appetizer and a kid's meal. That's not bad for a family of 3, but I'd rather go somewhere with better food quality.
