joegallows's Full Review: Logitech G15 (920-000379) Keyboard
The Logitech G15 v2 is the slightly younger brother of the original G15 keyboard. The original, now out of production, had blue lighting, a couple more rows of macro keys, a slightly clunkier design and the LCD screen had a flip cover on it. The newer v2 has changed all that.
The Logitech G15 keyboard is now notably sleeker looking, with smooth flowing lines and more consistent button design across the keyboard. The orange backlight has three settings: Off, Low and High. The high contrast the orange on black creates makes the keys easy to find in the dark, but never distracting. In fact, it looks rather futuristic is a sort of science fiction way.
The keys have a smooth feel to them without being slippery at all. They are very quiet, quieter than even the keyboard on my laptop. There is a sliding switch near the top of the keyboard to shut off the Windows and Context Menu keys, because you know you've accidentally pushed the Windows key in the middle of a game and have had to wait for the game to minimize, only to have to wait again for the game to come up again, while cursing the button that caused it all. This switch removes the need for that cursing in the first place. The multimedia keys worked with Winamp without any configuration, so I was pleased about that. Also, I have not noticed any wear on the keys yet as some other reviews have reported.
The LCD screen is pretty great. While the applications it comes with are fairly basic, there are a few very good applications freely available on the internet that pushes the functionality of the screen to the max.
The G macro keys are a breeze to use. Simply push the MR button, select the numbered G key you’d like the macro to be recorded to, perform the keystrokes, the push MR again. Keep in mind that the G keys record only keystrokes on the keyboard, not mouse clicks or movements. For me, this functionality is useful in Team Fortress 2, while playing the engineer class, I can easily select the option to have a sentry gun instantly at the ready instead of pressing the few buttons to do it. This is saved time and a less distracted finger that could save me. Likewise, I can tie certain automatic voice functions through the macros to call out for help, identify a spy or thank another player without having to interrupt my movement.
It is helpful to know that this keyboard is wider than most, though not as wide as its predecessor. It may not fit on all keyboard trays. While the keyboard sports two USB ports on the back, they are only USB 1.1, so don’t bother using them for storage devices as it will be too slow. Also, a small quibble, but the LCD screen, while very easy to read when you’re right in front of it, becomes impossible to see when you look at it from off to the side. Since the LCD tells me when I have new emails, I like to shut off my monitor and glance at the keyboard to see if I have new email, only to realize I can’t read the LCD in the first place! Lastly, in recent driver updates, the keyboard loose G key functionality when I wake my PC from sleep mode. The only way to restore functionality is to unplug, and then plug the keyboard back in, something I’d rather not have to do every time I wake it.
