Pros:High performance, very customizable, glides smoothly, looks great.
Cons:Only above average ergonomics, smooth grip can get scratched and torn, attracts dust underneath.
The Bottom Line: I would recommend this product to hardcore gamers that would take advantage of its great features but would caution those with average sized hands.
The Logitech G9 Laser Mouse is definitely one of the highest performing and most configurable mouse on the market today. It combines all the features that gamers and general users demand in a computer mouse that it left little room for improvement. With the price coming down and rebate offers available, it's a high end product that anyone can get their hands on. I've read and watched plenty of reviews on gaming mice and it came down to three: Logitech G5, Logitech G9 and Cyber Snipa Stinger. So, if you're considering purchasing something better than the average mouse in the store and don't want to put in as much research as I have, then you should continue to read this review to help you make your decision a little easier.

It has plenty of features to satiate most hardcore gamers but also some very useful features which can convince even the general computer user to consider spending a little extra money to purchase one. I consider myself more of a casual gamer but spend most of my time surfing the web and developing websites. So with that, I'd like to just talk about the top four features I like most about the Logitech G9 Laser Mouse.
1) Up to 3200 dpi precision. At the time of this review, 3200 dpi is the highest level of sensitivity offered by any mouse on the market and probably will be for awhile as I don't see the need for lightning speed. I enjoy the higher sensitivity level because it requires minimal wrist movement to move the cursor from one edge of the screen to the other. This is especially useful if you own a widescreen monitor. If you find yourself constantly frustrated by having to lift your mouse or running off your mouse pad then this is something you would be interested in. Of course you probably could get away by just increasing your mouse speed in control panel but because this mouse is engineered with functional sensitivity, it allows you to change your mouse speed on the fly!
2) Polytetrafluoroethylene feet. This mouse glides very smoothly on most surfaces. And since it incorporates a laser, you really can use this mouse on most surface textures. However, one thing I noticed is that if you use it directly on your desk, the feet do get micro-scratches in them and possibly wear out faster over time. I would suggest that you also purchase a gaming grade mouse pad with this. I also noticed that the bottom of the mouse picks up dust very easily by way of static-cling.
3) Frictionless Hyper-Fast scrolling. This is the one feature that made me decide to get the G9 over the G5 and Stinger. The silent, fast and frictionless scrolling is very nice because it allows you to scroll through pages of documents or a vertically long web page very quickly without tiring your finger. Personally, I feel the clicking scroll wheel is very annoying. Of course, if you like the clicking wheel, the G9 has a button on the bottom which allows you to switch between the two modes: MicroGear and Frictionless. The Setpoint software that comes with the mouse also allows you to customize how many lines of text each scroll click moves through, so you can get the exact speed preference you want with your scroll wheel.
4) Weight Tuning System. The G9 provides four 7gram and four 4gram weights so that you can personalize the weight of the mouse for your specific control needs. I'm currently using 14grams so the mouse feels very solid and each movement is purposeful.
Other features that come included with the Logitech G9 are: interchangeable grips, nine customizable buttons, configurable mouse profiles stored via on-board memory, custom color LED display, adjustable polling rate and durable braided cord (feels like a hiking boot's laces).
The ergonomics of the G9 are just slightly above average for the wide smooth grip. The thumb rest and concave pointer and middle finger buttons are nice, however, the mouse is pretty short. I'm 5'11" with average size hands and this mouse does not completely fill my palms. With my hands resting on the mouse, it barely reaches the deepest part of my palm. This requires the bottom part of my palm to rest completely on the table. If you like the feel of the G5 which has the shape of more traditional mice, then you may not like the G9. I believe they tried to accommodate a wider range of hand sizes (leaning towards the smaller end) and therefore made the radical design change. The slightly more narrow DryGrip is not much better or even worse. It is just as short as the wide grip. The most comfortable and ergonomic mouse that I've felt is the Logitech MX Revolution, however, it's not gaming grade and I believe only comes as wireless. I've also read that the smooth grip peels off over time (gross).
The Logitech G9 is the right choice for the hardcore gamer that doesn't want to compromise on features but may have to on ergonomics. I paid $74.95 for this mouse on Amazon and used a $25 rebate which made it only $49.95, less than most other gaming mouse on the market. At that price, I was willing to take the risk of not being completely satisfied with it. Asthetically, this mouse complements my Logitech Illuminated keyboard nicely. I would cautiously recommend this mouse to anyone with average size hands.
Amount Paid (US$): 74.95
