Pros: Good, reliable webcam. Attaches to a notebook computer.
Cons: Motion detector software doesn't work on my PC.
The Bottom Line: The Webcam Pro is a good choice, all around. While not the best webcam on the market, it's not the most expensive either. For normal use, this webcam shouldn't disappoint.
Those in the market for a good, reliable webcam should consider Creative's Webcam Pro. It may not sport the latest technology (it has a CMOS and not CCD sensor), but it does the job well, and won't break the bank either.
Physically, the camera is average-sized, but I was pleasantly surprised at how thin it is. Unlike the "golf ball" design of the vast majority of webcams, this model is essentially disc-shaped (though the lens/focus ring juts out). The reason for this design becomes apparent in the next section.
The webcam's base was designed with a notebook computer in mind, as it can clip onto the top of the notebook. Handy for me, since I use a notebook computer. Desktop users may find that the base is less than sturdy for placing on top of a monitor as it will likely move around a lot. The low-profile design therefore works well with a notebook. However, Creative only got it half-right: while the webcam is designed to be used with a notebook, it doesn't travel well. There is no lens cover for the webcam, and the base does not fold compactly into the unit. Both these factors make me hesitate to take it on the road.
The build quality of the webcam is excellent. The plastic is sturdy and feels solid, despite its size. The focus ring is easy to adjust, and the base is secure - not loose at all.
Technically speaking, the video quality is good. Not excellent, granted, but it gets the job done quite competently. The webcam's max. (video capture) resolution is 640x480 with a max 30 fps. The camera captures the center of the image very brightly, but I notice shadow in the periphery of the video window. The webcam captures a decent amount of detail.
The webcam software, called "PC-CAM Center," is laid out logically and is easy to use. Still pictures are saved in JPG or BMP format while video clips are saved as AVI files. As I mentioned, the motion detector software did not work on my computer (running XP Home). Personally, that's a moot point as I wouldn't use it anyway. But it may be a consideration for those who want this feature.
