Great Webcam for Stills and Video

Pros:Great software, OK support, easy to set up, and excellent for the casual webcam user.

Cons:A bit more expensive than others, no widscreen, 15fps cap at highest resolution.

The Bottom Line: Great webcam for everyday webcam chat, quick snapshots and video capturing. Do check out Microsoft's 720p webcam too.

This is my third webcam but first high definition one. The Logitech QUICKCAM PRO 9000 uses Carl Zeiss 2 megapixel lens and a decent built-in microphone.

I bought this camera with the intention of using it as a makeshift camcorder connected to my laptop. However, I did not confirm its capabilities of recording in widescreen 16x9 format. Sadly, this webcam isn't capable of native widescreen filming.

With that said, there's a lot to love about this webcam. For starters, the software is easy to set up in Vista 64-bit machines, which should mean it is even more of a breeze to set up on 32-bit or older, Windows XP machines. I tested this unit on a laptop T5xxx series Centrino Duo Core and then a Quad Core Q8330 desktop. Both machines had more than enough resources to film smoothly. Although the resolution maxes out at 2 megapixels, the webcam can interpolate images to go even higher. Since higher resolutions aren't native, it's not recommended. I tested it and as expected, the pictures looked grainy anything higher than 2MP.

RightLight technology is realtime software adjustment that allows the webcam to record in just about any light setting, adjusting exposure, focus and other levels.

The software that comes with the camcorder includes Logitech Vid webconferencing and the necessary capturing software for taking stills and videos. One caveat is with video, the frames per second drops drastically down to 15fps at 1600x1200 video resolution. Frames per second is how smooth video is captured, the more frames, the more fluid movement in video appears. Unfortunately, 2MP video is noticeably choppy with the webcam, even in bright settings because there is a cap of 15fps at the highest native resolution.

Other than that, this webcam does pretty much everything you expect it to if you're using it for Skype and other internet webcam chat programs. One bonus of the software is the ability to transform your face and head into an avatar of a dinosaur, cat, shark, alien, or stick figure LIVE. This means if you move your eyebrows, the avatar will also do so, at the same time while your webcam viewer sees this in real time. It's actually really fun.

The pricing of this unit is fair, however, do keep in mind there is a Microsoft 720P webcam that allows widescreen capturing and is available for less than $100 when on sale.
