| smartone86's Full Review: Logitech MXâ„¢ 510 (931162-0403) Mouse |
Recently my ball mouse that came with my desktop bit the dust. Since my computer recently ran out of warranty I was left with the option of suffering with a ball mouse that now had a mind of it's own, or buying a new one. Optical mice are the way to go, I decided.
Ball mice use a ball that spins around inside the bottom of a mouse to tell the computer where the pointer should go. No matter how clean you keep your computer room, this mechanism will get dusty and less accurate over time. Eventually the result it what I had, a mouse that does jerky movements, is slow, and sometimes plain old unresponsive.
Optical mice on the other hand use a ray of light in the bottom in place of the ball. The mouse tells the computer where to put the cursor by being able to tell which way the light is moving. Since the bottom is not open at all like on a ball mouse, the mechanism doesn't wear down nearly as quickly.
At first I bought a cheap optical mouse for $8. The mouse was an improvement over the old one, but flew around the screen way too fast and was still difficult to control. Not quite what I was hoping for. Lucky me, the next day a deal website I frequent said that you can get the Logitech MX 510 for $9.99 after rebates ($49.99 before). Count me in! I picked up the mouse at the store that day.
My first impression was: heavy. This mouse is much heavier than your typical mouse. It gives it a sturdy feeling and also makes it easier to control. By being heavy you are not as likely to over push it, and it just feels plain old solid.
Also, this mouse looks pretty darn cool, and you can tell the designers at Logitech put a lot of thought into it. The mouse has a blue finish, which the box claims every mouse is unique in. It is curvey and designed to fit your right hand perfectly. Left handers, unless you are used to "mousing" with your right hand, this is not the mouse for you. Check out Logitech's website with mice you can use though.
Finally I got home and got to take it out of the box. The thing feels perfect in my hand! 7 out of the 8 buttons are in perfect reach. The two typical "click" buttons are blended smoothly into the design and you just have to put a slight pressure on them to get the effect you want. The scroll wheel works like a typical scroll wheel allowing you to easily move up and down through documents. As an alternative way to move up and down through documents, below and above the scroll wheel are two arrow buttons that let you use your middle finger to scroll up or down. While I am used to using the scroll wheel, I quickly grew to love this method as well. The buttons are called "cruise control" and I can see why. They allow you to slowly scroll through a long document at a steady pace, making reading it a breeze. To the side of the mouse there are two more arrow buttons meant to be pushed with your thumb. These will by default take you back and forth when you are online or in Windows Explorer. A very handy feature, and comfortable to reach with your thumb. The 8th and final button is used to switch between documents if you have several open at once. I find it difficult to reach, especially without moving my hand a never use it. These buttons can all be customized.
A surprising thing about this mouse is that my mom, dad, my two sisters, and I all have very differently sized hands. Yet none of us have any problem holding it comfortably.
Plugging the mouse into the computer is easy. It can go in either a PS2 or a USB port.
The mouse settings can be changed to your desires, but out of the box was the perfect sensitivity for us. It glided across the screen perfectly. The sensitivity was exactly what I wanted. I cannot describe the feeling, but it makes computing a breeze. Your hand doesn't tire even after hours of constant clicking. It is just wonderful.
The mouse comes from Logitech, a great brand. As a result, there is a three year warranty.
While I don't exactly understand what the specs mean, it can handle 15Gs of acceleration. That means you can move your hand really fast, and your mouse will move really fast too (in my own words). It also has an 800 dpi sensor that captures 5.8 megapixels per second. That's the part I don't really understand, but I figured some of you might care. Basically, it all comes together to make a great mouse!
