The Bottom Line: Buy this product if you are experienced in software installation, can read between the lines of lousy documentation, and don't mind the aggravation of poor and expensive support.
rolandchase's Full Review: Logitech QuickCam Pro 4000 Web Cam
In my experience, Logitech produces great products with poor to fair documentation and support. I bought and tried to install the QuickCam Pro 4000 on my Windows 98SE Dell Optiplex. First, the documentation does not match what was in the box. It shows a picture of a "base" (singular) but there were actually two different bases in the box. There were no instructions on which base to use or how to remove it from one base and install on the other. The rest of the four mini-pages of the manual in English were not very helpful.
I tried to install the software that came with it, which the documentation doesn't even mention other than saying "Complete software and hardware installation." I received two error messages, even though I followed all the onscreen directions, swapping my Windows 98SE CD for the QuickCam 8.4.6 CD as directed. Since I could not overcome these problems I initiated a discussion thread with the Logitech support department, which resulted in unhelpful advice on only ONE of the two error messages I reported, and then a final message saying that "due to the nature of your issue" I had to telephone my question.
So I began calling Logitech at its non-tollfree support number. There I received some very helpful advice that should have been put in the paper documentation: The QuickCam software does not work very well with Windows 98. You should download Image Studio 7.30 from our website and try that.
So I did. This resulted in a faulty installation, which reported that I was missing five files. I found four of these files on a Windows 2000 computer at work and downloaded the fifth one from the internet after a Google search. Then I unintalled my faulty installation, started from scratch and re-installed Image Studio, and -- aaah, success at last.
C'mon, Logitech you can do better than that. A few SENTENCES in the documentation about installing on a Win98 machine would have saved me so much time. But that's Logitech for you. Good products, but not much help for the consumer.
