robinet's Full Review: Logitech QuickCam Pro 4000 Web Cam
I think the driver's related problems are solved by now with the new drivers (the latest version is 10.5.1) because it worked very fine for me and I installed this webcam 3 or 4 times on Windows 2000 and Windows XP on various computers (from Pentium III to latest Pentium 4). But I didn't install any additional software or features (like "face tracking").
The basic rule when installing a USB device (webcam, printer etc.) is to FIRST install the driver and plug the device only when the program will ask you to do so or after a restart.
The picture quality is OK, but the colors are not very bright. In low-light conditions it performs quite well, compared with other webcams.
Now this is an old model (it's replaced by QuickCam Pro 5000) but that's good, because you can get it at a low price.
The only thing that I really dislike is that the drivers are quite big, close to 100 MB. So, if you are on a slow connection the download will take a lot of time.
And you can't reduce the resolution; it seems that's a setting for your communication software. So if your software doesn't have this setting (Skype 2.5 does not have it) the video will eat your bandwidth. And usually the problem is your upload speed, not the download speed. Because what you are sending from this camera is the upload. A minimum of 128 Kb/s is required to have a quite smooth video and the sound without drops in quality.
If you buy it used, be sure to get the flexible grip, it's a must.
And it's working fine on a USB 1.1 connection, too.
