hwz1's Full Review: Logitech QuickCam Pro 4000 Web Cam
A few weeks I moved and in breaking down my computer and all the peripherals, I realized that my webcam is at least five years old. Five years in technology works like dog years, only instead of multiplying by seven you multiply by 20. In other words, my webcam was really old.
So, I set out purchase a new one. The old one was a Logitech and I did like the way it worked; easy to set up and simple to use while providing a decent picture. I was surprised by one thing in particular when shopping; the price. I remember paying around $90 five years ago and the price was basically the same for the newer models. I would have guessed that the price would have fallen.
THE PARTICULARS:

live video and chat
* Ability to add sound with a microphone
* Editing software allows you to create movies

and 9.1
IS THIS AN UPGRADE OVER WHAT I HAD BEFORE?
Yes, I would say that it is an upgrade. The pictures/videos are much improved and one area where I noticed a huge difference is with lighting. With the older model you literally had to have a light immediately over your head in order to get a decent picture. The Pro 4000 performs much better with mediocre light. No need to burn the top of your head on the ceiling any longer.
Additionally, the Pro 4000 has a motion detecting feature that permits the Quickcam to follow your movements- no more having to move the camera manually. And, finally, the supporting software is useful and easy to set up. So yes, I would say that the Pro 4000 is a significant upgrade over the previous models.
HOW DIFFICULT IS IT TO GET STARTED?
In short, not very. You simply unload the box and connect to your hard drive via a USB port. The next step is to install the software. From there, you are pretty much home free. You can simply follow the directions as to how to operate various aspects of the camera (Changing the view, the contrast, light, etc.) and how to interface with your favorite messenger platform.
IS THE VIDEO CHAT FUNCTION EASY TO USE?
Yes. If you check your messenger platform, you will find something similar to "Invite to view my webcam". Once you have told your messenger what type of camera you have and the two (Messenger program and the camera) know to interact with each other, you simply click on "Invite to view my webcam". Within a matter of seconds, the person should be able to view your webcam.
WHAT OTHER FUNCTIONS IS THIS USEFUL FOR?
I use the Pro 4000 in order to take photos of things that I sell on ebay. This is an inexpensive way to photograph things for sale on ebay and the cam takes a clear enough photo. You can also use the Pro 4000 to participate in a videoconference. I have not do this yet, but I am sure I will in the future. Not to mention, the ability to see and be seen by loved ones and friends when you are away.
WHAT COULD LOGITECH IMPROVE?
Not a whole lot. But, isn't there a better way to dock the Pro 4000? One problem I have always have is that the webcams are docked on the top of your computer. Once you dock it, you are basically stuck with it where you have it. Yes, you can move the webcam up and down and the Pro 4000 has a motion sensor, but I would love to be able to dock the webcam anywhere. With all the technology that we have, it is amazing that the only problem I can find is one that would seem so simple to solve. I will mention that the docking problem in not unique to Logitech, but plagues all of the webcam manufacturers.
WHAT DO I LIKE THE MOST?
I love the picture. Is it as good as a high quality digital camera? No. But, I would argue that the picture is as good as what you will get with a low end digital camera. The videos are also surprisingly clear and almost have a semi- professional touch to them. The bottom line is that I am very pleased with the quality of the pictures and videos that the Pro 4000 produces.
WOULD I PURCHASE ANOTHER ONE?
I would purchase another one without a second thought. The Pro 4000 does not cost a lot, works very well, and is easy to use. What is there not to like?
ANYTHING ELSE?
I would check out Amazon and Overstock to see if they have any deals. When I purchased the Pro 4000, I was able to save $10 by ordering through Amazon versus purchasing at Staples. Yes, it may take a week or two for the Pro 4000 to arrive, but to save a few dollars that may be worth it.
