Why did I get the fx? Two reasons: Great design and all finger action trackball!
I bought the trackman marble fx from onvia.com for around $50 and it's worth all the pennies I paid for it. Before the fx I had to bear the indignation of using the the synaptics touchpad on my Acer travelmate. The touchpad was a bad experience for a mouse person like myself; I like to think that it's because it simply wasn't physical enough. But then again it might just be that I didn't practice using it long enough.
Anyways I loathed using the touchpad so I decided to by myself a new toy for my new laptop. I was thinking of getting a input device maybe a new trackball, a healthy change from 6 years of mousing experience. Furthermore there are claims that working on finger dexterity is one of the keys of developing certain parts of the brain.. (in short i was definitely going to buy a trackball) After a month of research, I decided I need something on the cutting edge of design, something that is low on maintenance and something that is not too pricey.
At first I looked at those blue colored trackballs but these guys were still using rollers! It would be impossible to clean the accumulated gunk; I know cos a few of my mice died of these circumstances. So I turned my attention to the slightly higher priced logitechs. I looked @ the marblewheel but since I didn't quite like the prospect of overstraining my thumb I bought the fx.
I liked the universal scroll buttons and I like the way it fits my hand (I'm tempted to say it "fits like a glove" but it sounds silly). Very nice. It's all finger action, with the exception of the last finger the first 3 fingers would be cupping the groovy polka-dotted red ball and the fourth finger would be assigned to the right click button. It would have been immensely better if the left click button were to be placed within the reach of the forefinger though. It takes a bit of getting used to roll the ball with three fingers but nevertherless the fx does a pretty neat job overall.
