| bitbank's Full Review: Logitech Trackman Marble Wheel (904334-0403) Track... |
I have been using Logitech Marble track balls for several years, but the latest version with the scroll wheel is just perfect. Why I think this is the best input device:
1) Small footprint
I have a small, sliding keyboard tray on the underside of my desk and there isn't much space to slide a mouse. The trackball is the best way to make use of the little space I have.
2) Precise control
The optical nature of the trackball, as well as the way I control it with my thumb give me precise control. I have never felt it "slip" or "jump" like mice do.
3) Long time between cleanings
Mice need to be cleaned frequently because of "finger cheese". That dust and dead skin which accumulates on the ball and rollers. Logitech claims that you never need to clean their optical trackballs and that is a bit of an exaggeration. I believe I need to clean it about once or twice a year.
4) Scroll Wheel
This is the best feature for me because half of my time is spent in the web browser and the other half in the Visual Studio text editor. With the scroll wheel I can scroll up and down without having to move my eyes off of what I'm doing and more importantly without having to try and target a small square on the scroll bar. This definitely makes me more productive and saves a measureable amount of time each day.
This device is not cheap, but it is definitely worth it. I found it on the Computer Geeks web site for only $27 in plain OEM packaging. I bought one for each computer I own including my laptop.
Some people have a hard time transitioning from a traditional mouse to the track ball, but it is worth the time invested to make the jump.
