Pros: Decent comfort for notebook mouse, tiny leave-in receiver, long battery life, good scroll wheel
Cons: loud clicks. buttons a bit hard to depress. plastic like feel.
The Bottom Line: Good basic notebook mouse with a tiny worry-free receiver. If you care anything about loud clicks or have weak fingers, this is not your mouse.
hankshay's Full Review: Logitech V450 NANO Mouse (910-000620)
I'm going to frequently compare this mouse with the Logitech VX Nano. I'm doing this because I think many will compare the two because both use the "nano" size receivers.
FEEL
The Logitech V450 Nano is slightly larger than most notebook mice in length and height. I felt it was significantly more comfortable than the VX Nano.
I find myself using notebook mice in two ways: (1) three fingers on top where the middle finger is on the scroll wheel or (2) 2-fingers on top with the index finger switching to the scroll wheel when needed.
I felt this mouse was more comfortable with the later (2-fingers on the top). Here is why I felt the configuration with 3-fingers on top is not comfortable:
The buttons on the mouse are easier to depress if fingertips are at the front edge of the mouse where there is more leverage. With that said, the middle finger is usually longer than the index or ring finger. That means if the middle finger is on the wheel, located an inch back from the top right/left button edge, the index and ring finger naturally lie either at or behind the wheel and where it requires more force to press the buttons.
The sides of the mouse are tapered and covered with a soft rubber. The top is hard plastic and feels that way too.
QUALITY/CONSTRUCTION
It feels a bit on the cheap side. The battery cover is a bit on the loose side and seems flimsy. It is release by a lever on the bottom of the mouse. Once the battery door is open, it reveals slots for 2 AA batteries and a slot for the nano receiver. There is nice power button on the bottom.
BUTTONS/WHEEL
The mouse has 3 buttons: left/right click and wheel button. The standard wheel button already makes this mouse better than the nano vx; nano vx lacked the wheel button. However, like the buttons, requires some pressure to depress.
This mouse is a loud clicker. Please do not use it sitting next to me or in the next cube.
The scroll wheel is very nice: silent and effortless scrolling. Also, this mouse supports side scroll. This allows scrolling sideways on wide documents. I find this more useful on non-widescreen screens where there isn't enough horizontal real estate. Keep in mind that side scroll is natively supported in Vista, but requires installing Logitech drivers in XP.
PERFORMANCE
I use the mouse for browsing the web, editing documents, spreadsheets and software code editing. Also I play games occasionally. I've no problems with any of these. Then again, I've had no issues with most recent wireless mice.
There isn't a noticeable lag or delay. As far as the laser goes, it seems to track on most surfaces well except for glass table tops and mirrors.
BATTERY
The unit uses 2 AA size batteries that are reported to last 12 months. I've yet to see the battery low indicator light turn to on after a couple weeks of constant use.
OTHER
The nano usb adapter is very small and only extrudes slightly out of the usb port and can be left there without worry during laptop transport. I think the receiver on the v450 nano sticks out 1mm further than the nano vx.
I had no connection issues even at 10ft away. Connection was great even if the nano usb adapter was on the other side of the laptop.
One of the good reasons to get a non-bluetooth mouse is that you can easily move it from computer-to-computer by simply plugging the nano adapter in the target computer. With the current bluetooth mice, it must first be paired with the computer ( and re-pair to the original when moved back).
The mouse comes with good instructions, usb extension cable, AA Duracell alkaline batteries, and the usb nano adapter.
