I had been looking for a nice new set of computer speakers since my Logitech Z560 system was damaged by a surge from a lightning strike last year. The most important things I wanted were good sound, strong bass and a reasonable price tag. I typically use my PC as a stereo system for my bedroom so I wanted something more than your low end $50 computer speakers. After researching various speaker systems, I decided on the Logitech Z5300e.
PACKAGE CONTENTS
The package contains:
- subwoofer unit (which everything else connects to)
- 5 satellite speakers with RCA type connectors and removable grilles
- wired control unit
- video game console adapter
- manual
SETUP
The setup was easy. The hardest part was moving the subwoofer unit and running all the wires to it. Since I have a 6 channel sound card in my PC, I used all 3 of the plugs. One set is for the front speakers, one is for the rear speakers and the third is for the center channel. The control unit is designed very well. One dial is used to control the main volume, the subwoofer volume, the center channel and the fader. A button selects which of those the dial will be used for. There's also a power button and a matrix button to simulate surround sound with only input from the front speakers.
SOUND
Since I owned the Z560 and was very impressed with them, I was curious to see how these compared to them. I use computer speakers mostly for playing music, but I did test out some games and movies with them. I was glad to find that they sound BETTER than the Z560 system did. The sound is definitely clearer. I also don't notice as much of the "lack of midrange" that I noticed on the Z560 system. There's also plenty of powerful bass. This system can't quite match the sound level on the Z560, but that's to be expected since it's rated at 280W while the Z560 is 400W. In any case, there's no reason to be concerned about volume as this system delivers plenty of it. Overall, I think the drop in power was WELL WORTH the improvement in sound. I can see why these speakers have won numerous awards.
CONCLUSION
These computer speakers are great for anybody who wants above average sound without paying hundreds of dollars. They are great speakers for gaming (either PC or console), playing music or even as a home theater system. They can be purchased for under $150. I got mine shipped for $150 have a $50 mail-in rebate. So, the total for me is $100. For that price, these speakers are outstanding value !
