| opinionated3's Full Review: Logitech Z-340 2 Speakers |
The speakers on my PC finally quit and I was needing to replace them, so like most of computer equipment I get to use are hand me downs from my wife's computer. So I would get her older Creative labs Inspire 2.1 Slim 2600 Speakers and I would have to go out and search for a new set of speakers for her to use on her computer.
I normally go to our local CompUSA when I am looking for good deals on computer accessories, but this time I went to my local computer Hardware store PC Club instead. They have a smaller selection but better pricing then CompUSA does. I was hoping not to spend a ton of money but still get a really nice sounding set of speakers. I found one speaker system that were right in my price range under $50.00; the Logitech Z-340.
I wanted to test out the sound but they didn't have this system attached to a PC at the time. I asked a sales person if he could hook them up so I could get an idea on what they would sound like. He hooked them up to a portable CD player and I was blown away by the amazing bass of this system. This system is part of what is called a 2.1 sound system which means 2 satellite and a subwoofer, hence the 2.1. I knew after listening to these speakers for just a few minutes that these were the perfect system for our limited space that we have on my wife's computer desk.
Installation
As you can imagine there really isn't much to the installation process of a set of speakers, but the trick was fitting them into the limited space on my wife's computer desk. Part of the reason is because the subwoofer portion of this speaker system is a bit on the bulky side. The subwoofer is a 9" cube, so you can imagine it wasn't the easiest thing to find a place to put it. Luckily the two satellite speakers are small and they fit rather nicely next to the monitor on the top shelf of the desk. The system came with all the necessary speaker wires to complete the installation. The subwoofer is a powered subwoofer and this means that it plugs into the wall and the built in power supply delivers the needed power for the whole speaker system.
Ease of Operation
Once the speakers are connected to your PC, there is no special drivers or setting on the computer. You use the volume control that is part of the Windows operating system. All of the volume controls are on the speakers.
A little about the speakers
Subwoofer A few things that help these speakers create the great sound that comes out of them. A combination of heavily reinforced subwoofer in a 9" cubed design helps to create that deep booming bass. There is a patented dual sound chamber designed within the cube shaped enclosure. This dual sound chamber helps to create twice the sound energy then other designs. note: This information was taken from the side of the box. The subwoofer only has one control knob on the back and it is used to raise the volume of the bass coming out of the subwoofer. The subwoofer has black wire mesh grill covering the speaker to keep it from getting damaged and it has a silver colored accent ring holding the grill on.
SatellitesThe two satellite speakers are also black like the subwoofer, but they are very diminutive in size. They each have a reversible stand that allows it to be mounted on a wall by simply loosening the screw and rotating stand. The stand has the holes already in them so you just simply have to decide where you want to mount them and put the screws through the holes and attach them to the wall. The satellites are designed to handle the midrange and high sound. Unlike the subwoofer the satellite speakers have a soft fabric grill covering and are very light weight. The satellites stand 4.75" tall with the stands set in their normal position and 3.50" tall if you had them mounted on the wall. The right hand satellite contains the controls for the speaker system other than the subwoofer volume control. Across the lower portion of the satellites is where you will find the power button, volume control knob, headphone jack (3.5 mm or 1/8")and a power indicator. This indicator is probably the only thing I really find annoying about the speaker system, it is a very bright blue and I don't mean the shade of blue but the intensity of the light. The left hand side satellite doesn't have anything on the front except the soft fabric grill covering and a little Logitech logo. The right hand side satellite also has three wires sticking out of it, one is leading to the other satellite speaker and one the plugs into the back of your computer (soundcard or onboard sound jack) and the third is the power cable the connects to the subwoofer to supply the power for the satellite speakers.
I don't know how the power rating compare with other speakers available on the market. The power rating of the subwoofer is 20 watts RMS and each of the satellites are rated at 6.5 watts RMS. That makes a total of 33 watts RMS and with all that power is why the sound is so nice. Even though the power doesn't come close to the 500 watts of power that my home theater system on my TV, it has the same deep bass and high and midrange separation that I love.
Likes and Dislikes
My wife and I have been enjoying these speaker since we first hooked them up and I don't see any reason for that to change any time soon. Even though the subwoofer is a little on the bulky side and wouldn't fit on the floor under the desk it fit perfect on the shelf in between the satellite and the monitor. The very diminutive size of the satellites speakers are perfect fit on top shelf of the computer desk. I can also mount them on the wall if I want to. We were truly blown away by the power of this little speaker system. After popping in one of my wife's favorite CD's (Diary of a Madman by Ozzy) the deep booming base was so amazing we didn't want to shut it off. It also enhances our video game experience on the computer.
I would recommend these speakers to everyone that needs a great sounding speakers to listen to Audio CD's, MP3 files or video games.
