Pros: Great sound for the price
Cons: short surround cables, no headphone jack, no tone controls
The Bottom Line: If you need a modestly priced compact set of speakers with good, clear sound I cannot think of any better.

| mdbrown's Full Review: Logitech Z-540 4 Speakers |
I own a set of Z-560s for my computer and am very pleased with their performance so, when I built systems for my kids I decided to go with the Z-540 figuring they'd be okay. They turned out to be more than okay, they are excellent for the price and good enough to get the wife beating on the kids door!
The cabling is a bit inconvenient as the surround cables are definitely too short. The controls are all on the right front speaker. They consist of, from left to right, the volume knob, power switch, power lamp, M3D switch and fader. The M3D feature is nice in a lower priced set as it provides a passable 3D effect from stereo source material. That being said, I would've given it up for Bass and Treble controls. There is a bass knob on back of the Sub but it's not really meant to be used often as indicated by the inconvenient location.
The sub is a small, square wooden box with a front mounted 8" woofer. Whatever magic Logitech used works as this thing puts out an impressive amount of useable bass for such a small, moderately priced unit with a rather modest 20 watt amp. Overall sound quality is excellent, for music you'll find a well defined soundstage, smooth mid and high end sound and the aforementioned bass. You won't fill a large room with symphony sound but you can pretty well rock out in a typical bedroom.
Setup is a breeze, approx. 10 minutes from opening the box to listening to music. While these are obviously not state of the art I think you'll be hard pressed to find a better set of speakers at anywhere close to the price.
