| doobeeduck's Full Review: Logitech Z-540 4 Speakers |
Sexy black color - but there's a piercing blue power-on light on the front right satellite. Nicely constructed, POWERFUL, room-shaking (and actually only 40watt RMS) subwoofer - designed with a 4" driver but outputs equal to an 8". Your neighbors will come to hate you.
Cables for the rear surround speakers could do with being longer, they're about 10 or 12 feet but can be extended with a regular RCA composite style cable.
Gives nice performance for DVD playback on the PC - if you're really into that then you should probably go for the Z-640s which are a complete 5.1 package for about $15 more.
Where the Z-540s really shine are MP3 playback and GAMES. Got yourself a nice multi-output soundcard? You will love these speakers. When I purchased these I was still using my SB PCI128 - had basic low-end 4 speaker output. Then I upgraded to the Hercules Fortissimo III 7.1, and what a world of difference - more spatial positioning, cleaner sounds, it was like I'd never heard true 4 speaker surround until I got that hercules card. However, I did need to tweak the software equalizer settings for the soundcard to get the best sound. On default settings it was a little muddy in the mid-range for MP3s, and the dialog was not too clear on DVDs.
There is a special 3D sound button labeled M3D - best used when you only have a 2 channel source playing, as it will stream some sounds out to the 2 surround speakers for a surround experience. When you're playing games or DVDs which are supplying 4 channel sound or greater it's best to leave M3D off since it does funny things to the sound, and seems to lose some spatial positioning (at least to my ears).
One bad point about the 'manual' it doesn't mention any technical specifications of the speakers, such as the speakers true frequency range.
