Pros: Good coverage, natural look, SPF 19, easy to apply
Cons: Finding the right shade can be difficult, can accentuate dry or flaky skin
I've really been wanting to try some of the new powdered mineral foundations, but after my bitter disappointment with Neutrogena Mineral Sheers, I'd been hesitant to try anything else. After hearing some good things about L'Oreal's new mineral offering, Bare Naturale Powdered Mineral Foundation, I decided to take another chance, and wow! this one is a winner in my book!
~ Product Description
L'Oreal Bare Naturale Powdered Mineral Foundation, according to L'Oreal, is "the healthiest form of coverage your skin can get." What is so great about powdered mineral foundations? According to L'Oreal, taken from walgreens.com:
- Powdered minerals are all natural, providing a flawless makeup look in the purest of forms
- Powdered minerals provide the coverage of a foundation but the soft, light feel of a powder
- Perfect skin without the heavy, mask-like feel of many traditional foundation products, and allow skin to breathe
- Safe for even the most sensitive skins and provides natural sun protection
- Light to medium coverage
- Contains Aloe and Vitamin B5 to soothe, condition and protect sensitive skin
- Contains no unnecessary fillers, no unnecessary preservatives, and is oil-free and fragrance-free
L'Oreal Bare Naturale features an attractive and, I think, effective packaging. Loose powders and mineral powder foundations can be messy and a pain to apply, but L'Oreal has done a decent job of making this foundation easy and non-messy to apply.
The 1 oz. of powder foundation is contained in a small, round, plastic jar. The top of the jar has a screw-off lid, and the brush applicator is attached to the top of the lid. The brush has a round shape, is all-natural, and on the small side, about an inch and a quarter in diameter. To hold the brush, you actually hold onto the screw-off lid. When you unscrew the lid with the brush attached, you'll see a little sifter insert, where the powder collects when you turn the jar upside down. Just dip the brush into the powder on the sifter, then apply. There is a clear plastic top that snaps into place which covers the brush. This packaging is actually quite portable, not terribly large, and safely contains the powder. It should travel quite well.
This foundation is available in several different shades: Soft Ivory, Light Ivory, Nude Beige, Creamy Natural, Natural Beige, Buff Beige, Sun Beige, and Classic Tan. Note that while the container holding the powder is clear, it's rather hard to tell exactly what the shades will look like after application. I didn't have the benefit of a tester when I bought mine. A tester for this would be extremely helpful. I chose Soft Ivory, and it's just a teensy bit on the light side for my summertime skin, yet it's close enough. I think I got lucky. Expect to pay around $14.99 for this.
~ My Experience
I like the natural aspect of powdered mineral foundations. That's great, but how they perform is the important thing! I so wanted to like this.
I turned the jar over with the lid on to get some powder on the sifter, then gently rubbed the brush in the powder, tapped it to remove any excess, and applied to my face in a swirling motion. I could immediately see results! I kept swirling and buffing the powder onto my skin, and I'm tellin' you - wow! My skin tone was evened out, most imperfections covered decently, my skin looked smooth without a heavy makeup look or feel. I did not need to reapply - once was enough. I was frankly amazed at the coverage, especially after trying Neutrogena Mineral Sheers, which did absolutely nothing - nothing! I also found the bush applicator quite nice and very effective, as well as easy to use. The "mess" factor was minimal. I like the way this is packaged.
L'Oreal Bare Natural Powdered Mineral Foundation has an almost creamy like texture, if you can imagine a creamy powder. It blends beautifully. And truly a little bit goes a long way. You can easily overdo it if you aren't careful. It provides a fairly matte, yet natural finish. Now I have noticed a difference in how this looks depending on the moisturizer I use. I do have some dry patches, and this foundation can settle into the dry patches and almost enhance the dry look, if I don't use a relatively heavy moisturizer. If you have very dry or flaky skin, you may have a problem with this foundation, so just be aware of that possibility.
I discovered to my delight this foundation also wears beautifully all day long, with no need for touch ups, even in some heat and humidity.
~ Final Thoughts
I am really happy with L'Oreal Bare Natural Powdered Mineral Foundation. I am thoroughly impressed with the nearly flawless look, the medium coverage, and the ease of application. And the packaging makes it portable and it travels well. The hardest thing may be finding your exact right shade, which after all, is hugely important. L'Oreal - please provide testers for this foundation! Just keep in mind, though, if you have very dry or flaky skin this can potentially accentuate the dryness, although a rich moisturizer has minimized that effect for me.
